Earth Mama Dolls by Terri Roessler

My dolls are made from a pattern designed by Elise Peeples, who lives in Battleground, Washington. I first spotted these dolls at a show in Salt Lake City, Utah and immediately bought the pattern. I am a perpetual pattern and fabric collector, but this pattern and doll, being Pagan and of the Earth Mother, appealed to me like no other.

I made the first doll for Elspeth Sapphire, my Wicca teacher and friend. I am a Reiki practitioner as well as being a Wiccan/Pagan. I filled the doll with Reiki and sent it to her. Elspeth is ill a lot, and really can benefit from the Reiki love and healing. :)

The first doll unfolded a new experience for me. Before I started making the dolls I had a difficult time "feeling" the Reiki energy flow in my hands. When I made these dolls for friends, the Reiki flowed and flowed. They built up my confidence and gave me the opportunity to share my new skill with my friends. I sent the dolls to my friends and they got a full dose of Reiki comfort and healing, along with a beautiful Mama to cuddle. I had the satisfaction of knowing that I could make a small difference. Life is hard, but I can help just a little bit.

To back up a bit, Reiki is a natural healing technique which channels the Universal Life Force through a Reiki practitioner's crown chakra, to their heart, then out through their hands. It is an awesome technique that can be learned by anyone. All a person needs to do is have an attunement by a Reiki Master and a small amount of training. The rest is learned through experience.

There are three Reiki levels, Reiki I, II, and Master. Reiki I is generally obtained for oneself. The only way that a Level I practitioner can use Reiki is to actually lay their hands on their self, the person, or item that they wish to heal/charge. I was a Reiki I practitioner when I started making the dolls. Since I couldn't send Reiki distance yet, I decided that I would get around that little obstacle by putting the energy in the dolls and sending them to friends.

Reiki II is the next step for many people. The practitioner is attuned to Reiki symbols, which permit emotional/psychological healing, stronger physical healing, and distance healing. I was attuned to Reiki II in June, 1997. When this finally came about, I could Reiki my friend's dolls from my house (distance healing) and "recharge" them as needed. This made me very happy. Most of the dolls were being used frequently and the energy was being used up. The dolls could easily be recharged.

Master is the teaching level and not all Reiki practitioners move there. I am studying for Master and will be trained and attuned in New Mexico in June, 1998. I will be able to teach and attune others to Reiki when I achieve this. I'm not sure what this means for my dolls, but I'm sure something will come along.

Each level of Reiki has brought a new awareness to me, a new beginning, and joy. It has opened up an awareness of the Gods that are always around me, as well as my guides and nature spirits. I've learned to reach out and touch people and be there with them in spirit. I've learned that in the spirit of nature lies deity. And I, Terri, an insignificant speck in this huge universe, can close my eyes and know that the Gods are there.

The Gods and Guides are pushing me towards Master level. There must be a good reason I should be there. As a good friend has told me, I volunteered somewhere, sometime, to serve the universe. Reiki and my dolls help me to do my job.
