We finally got to try out our backup board. Hardware problems caused the outage. The motherboard on Bob's server desided to die. We are now on a backup server and generally functioning well. A few things were lost in the transition, however. The database storing member poetry for our community area did not survive, for example. CauldronMUX was down for a couple of weeks, It's now back up, but running alpha code as the older stable code would not compile under the newer version of Linux on the new server. We all owe Bob a lot of thanks (and a keg of his favorite brew) for all the time he pu into getting things back up and running. ===== ===== FLASHCHAT REPLACES JAVA CHAT ===== Last month, we started to experiment with a new Flash-based Chat program to replace our slightly buggy on some systems Java Chat program. When we moved to the new server, Bob decided not to reinstall the older JAVA chat system as it was just too buggy. So we are using the Flash Chat system as our alternative to CauldronMUX. It has more features that the old Java Chat (such as multiple chat rooms, private chat rooms, etc.) It also works on for more members with less trouble. ===== ===== MESSAGE BOARD UPGRADED TO BEEHIVE FORUMS 0.6.2 ===== While we were moving to the new server, we upgraded our forum software to the latest version of Beehive Forums. This is a bug fix release so there aren't many new features, but search works again. It was broken in 0.6.1 which was a great annoyance. ===== ===== 2005 WAS A BUSY YEAR ===== 2005 was a great year for The Cauldron's message board -- we had 115,186 posts in 2005. TC forum members are a very talkative bunch. If you haven't joined us on the message board lately, you really ought make a new year's resolution to join us soon. [02] ========= ========= CAULDRON EVENTS ========= by The Cauldron: A Pagan Forum Staff ========= ===== ===== JANUARY CAULDRON CHALLENGE ===== In January's Challenge, we're going to turn our gaze inward. This month your Challenge is to take the entire month to examine your life. Look at how you live, the things you do, the people you interact with and how you do that. Look at your habits, your work, your play, your thoughts and feelings. Don't leave anything out. Look at your life as a collective whole. Is there anything you want or need to change? Make a list, if you want, or just note and make mental notes to work on things. Do you get defensive too much? Do you throw out too many things? Buy too much stuff you don't need? Are there people in your life you shouldn't be associating with, or people who aren't in your life you should be seeking out? Are you neglecting any part of taking care of yourself, mind, body, and spirit? Are there things you keep meaning to do and not getting around to? Are you where you want to be in your life in general right now? Now, what are you going to do about it? You don't have to do anything about these things this month. The point of this Challenge is not actually to change, although of course one hopes that you would go on to act upon the needs you've noticed. The point is simply to take the month to do a kind of self-evaluation, so that you're consciously aware of what it is you might want or need to change, and then to figure out how you can make things more like you want them to be. (Thank you to Sperran for inspiring this one!) http://www.ecauldron.net/cncboard.php?m=8539.1 [03] ========= ========= CAULDRON DISCUSSIONS ========= Recent Discussion Topics on our Message Board ========= In an average month, over 200 new discussion topics are started on The Cauldron's message board. Here are a few of the more interesting recent discussions. It's not too late to join in. Thanks to Bloglet, you can now receive an email every night on days we post new site news items to the main page of The Cauldron's web site. These emails contain a link to the new item and the first couple of lines of the news text. The context of this was a conversation in which I'd mentioned, somewhat offhandedly, that the Horned One is not really part of my path. I don't disbelieve in Him, or have "issues" with Him, I just have enough Gods and Goddesses Whom I worship already. I suppose an argument could be made for Pan filling that role in my personal pantheon, but I don't really associate Pan with many of the attributes I frequently hear mentioned with regard to the Horned One in Wiccan parlance. Anyway, that's somewhat beside the point for this question. This fellow's argument was that if we don't give all Gods Their due, we're somehow imposing negative energy upon Them and turning Them into demons. I can see how some Gods have been demonized in some people's minds, but he seemed to be arguing for the potential to inflict actual damage on Them. I could see an argument made that in having sufficient fear energy around a particular God, one could create a demonic thought-form to which one had attached the name of that God. But simply "not following" or "not worshipping" a particular God? That seems absurd to me. There are too many of Them. Has anyone here ever heard that saying? If so, how do you interpret it? Do you agree with it? Why or why not? * Read (or join in) this discussion: http://www.ecauldron.net/cncboard.php?m=8672.1 ===== ===== I Don't Like That God So I'll Change Him? ===== I was sitting here looking at a train wreck of a thread in another forum and I began pondering how some people want to change what some gods do. It isn't all gods, I mean I don't think I've ever run into anybody claiming that Aries was really a smith and cattle god and didn't practice war at all. Is it gender stereotyping? Is it being uncomfortable with some facets of life? Is it trying to make those particular gods more in line with one's own thoughts of "goodness" and "rightness"? Now I realize that I don't resonate well with some gods. Most Asian, Hindu, and African gods don't even show up on my radar so to speak. (except once for Kali Ma who wanted the festival of colors from a self proclaimed devotee) Maybe I don't have the right mind set being chosen instead of doing any choosing on my own. If you choose your gods do youget to change their job description? I correct mis-information as I can, but why does it persist in the first place? Is it really as simple as not liking a god and wanting them to change to suit the individual? * Read (or join in) this discussion: http://www.ecauldron.net/cncboard.php?m=8619.1 ===== ===== Are False Things Real Too? ===== Yes, that makes no sense. follow the logic, though ... (and this really only makes sense, I think, for people who are at some level pantheists/panentheists/that sort of thing). But everything that exists is part of the universe. (of God, of the Divine .. pick your noun and follow it through). This includes us. Now, false things can only exist in the minds of something thinking about it .. it's pretty useless to say that a flitterdigibbet doesn't exist unless someone was thinking about it before. (but now, of course, it applies to the analogy. it just didn't until I said it. lost yet? I think I am ...) But now that I (And perhaps you) are thinking about this flitterdigibbet, it exists in our minds. and since our minds are part of the universe, doesn't that make a flitterdigibbet part of the universe too? Or did I get hopped up on existentialism instead of tryptophan from my turkey last night? * Read (or join in) this discussion: http://www.ecauldron.net/cncboard.php?m=8590.1 ===== ===== What is Magic? ===== I thought I would toss this out as a discussion topic so that people can share their thoughts on the matter and perhaps some of our less experienced members can learn more about what magic is really all about. Everyone here has spoken of magic. There have been debates over classifications of it (i.e. the black or white debate). We've spoken about the fact that it isn't the kind of thing that Hollywood likes to make movies about. But all of these discussions haven't really looked at the heart of the matter. What is magic? How does it work? Where does it come from? Why is it here? So...how does everyone here view magic? 1. Is it a natural force one can shape with will alone? 2. Is it the power of the gods? 3. Or is it simply based upon saying the right words and having the right supplies? * Read (or join in) this discussion: http://www.ecauldron.net/cncboard.php?m=8427.1 ===== ===== Are Pagan Families That Rare? ===== My oldest son's wedding is this Sat and it got me to thinking. My son is more or less a laid back Reclaiming type and is marrying a very nice eclectic witch. My grandson will be the ring bearer, he's only three but his dad (my youngest) is also Pagan in his beliefs. With all my kids it's more of a philosophy of life, their outlook, something they are more than what they do. Although they do not hesitate to ask me for readings or a spell when in need! Anyway, back on track, I realized there will be three witchy generations present and involved and of course many witches (and non witches, mainly the brides family) there to celebrate with us. Is this that rare? I noticed in the holiday threads here at TC many people can't admit or disguise their Solstice Rites, or celebrate Christmas so their families are not upset with them. This would never even cross my mind, but then my parents passed over years ago and I am the Old Generation now. I am curious, first; how many folks do not think twice about telling people they celebrate Yule or Solstice or whatever non Christmas thing? Second; how many have more or less Pagan families (more than one generation), family celebrations and the like? * Read (or join in) this discussion: http://www.ecauldron.net/cncboard.php?m=8357.1 [04] ========= ========= CAULDRON REVIEWS ========= Most of The Cauldron's book reviews are now written by Mike Gleason. [05.1] ========= ========= FEATURE ARTICLE: ========= PAGAN ENERGY HEALING? ========= by Jason D. ========= Reiki, the Violet Flame, Johrei, Seichem, Shinkiko, The white light of the universe, Magnified Healing; what is all of this stuff? When shopping around the new age circuit one comes across many different and conflicting energy-healing modalities. Many pagans may feel uncomfortable borrowing from a culture that may or may not conflict with their beliefs, also some healing modalities seem so far removed from the physical plane that it makes the earth based folk uncomfortable. To make matters slightly more confusing many healing modalities claim to be the "best" or "most powerful" one as if there is some kind of hierarchy. So what is a good little pagan to do? Of course if you want to follow Reiki or some other healing system then more power to you, and happy googling. However, if you want to practice some kind of psychic healing within a pagan context you need not look any further. All it takes is some imagination or rather visualization. You may be moved to try one of these techniques: 1) Grounding with a purpose: It is a common practice to visualize oneself as a tree while grounding. While you are connected to the earth and sky ask for the correct amount of energy flow through your body. Visualize or simply will the energy to move through you and meet at your heart. Then see it move down your hands and into your client. Make sure that you do not use your own personal energy. To help prevent this if you have trouble, visualize separate filter-like shields around you and your client. Let the energy flow until you intuitively feel like it is complete. After thank the energies and release them. 2) Elements of healing: Would you rather, for whatever reason, call upon the elements instead. Cast a circle and go to each quarter. When you call the directions say something like: " I call upon the element of air. Element of our breath and thought. I ask that the correct amount of air energy needed to bring _____ into balance (and thus health) come to this circle." After you are done see the energy slowly descending into the person. Sort of like a reverse cone of power. After close the ritual as usual and thank the elements. Ground the excess energy. It is possible to use only one of the elements if you feel that they are not balanced at one thing. When in doubt just call all four of them. The right energies will come. It is also possible to not cast a circle simply have the elements present, and see it rising from the object and fixing the problem. 3) Gods to the rescue: Some pagans are more focused on the Gods rather than the elements. These pagans may enjoy using this method. It also can be used in conjunction with the rest. There are Gods of healing in every pantheon. Make sure you do your research carefully. If you wanted to be specific, you can research other gods besides healing, for example, if you are helping someone who is infertile, call upon a fertility deity. When you select the God that you would like to work with, it is recommended that you leave a small offering while introducing yourself, and explaining the situation. If you get the inner green light (even if you don't), say thank you and then wait until the session. If they say no then continue your search. If you are a strict Wiccan, then simply call upon the healing Goddess and God. When you are ready and the client is comfortable, call the deity and remind him or her who you are and ask for helps. Feel the God near you and embracing you; (you may use a different visual as long as the purpose is to connect with him/her.) as they are doing so feel the healing energy go through you and into the patient. Continue this for as long as needed. Make sure that you thank the deity and then ground and center as usual. This can be quite powerful. Oh and make sure that you are open. A different God or Goddess may show up than you expected but that is probably rare. If you would like to really get into this style of healing and plan to do it on a regular basis, there are a few things that you may experiment with that will enhance your practice. You can try some of the following methods: Crystal Clarity: If you would like the energy of the earth and sky to be more focused, Obtain a crystal point and hold it in your hand. When you are sending energy, visualize it going through the crystal. See it come out of the crystal like a laser destroying and fixing the specified problem. If Crystals are too new agey for you, focus your energy with your athame or wand. Power Sachet: A good way to become more attuned to the elements is to create a sort of spell bag for it. Obtain a cloth bag of whatever color your intuition tells you. To fill this bag you need a representation of the four elements. Ask your deity to help you fill it. Some suggestions may be, a feather for air, a stone for earth, a vial of water for water and some hot pepper or an unlit match for fire. When you are finished pass it through the four elements again asking that it be consecrated for the purpose of attuning you to the natural world. Deity Fashion: You may decide that you really like the god or goddess that you are working with and you would like to attune to him/her on a deeper level. Jewelry is always a nice way of doing it. If you can, try to find a necklace of that particular deity. If you can't simple obtain a piece of jewelry of an animal associated with him/her. Next, get at least seven small candles, (or any number of candles that is associated with that deity). Place one each day (or night whatever is appropriate) in a holder next to your ring or pendant. Offer one candle a day to the deity asking that the piece of jewelry be empowered to attune you to his/her energy. Wear it with you as often as possible, especially during a healing session. You can use this method for a statue if you wish. Keep the statue in the room in which you do healings. Of course you don't need anything physical to attune to a god/dess, but it can be a nice enhancement. So there you have it. You don't have to stray far from your tradition in order to heal someone with energy. You only need to look at your beliefs and your creativity. Happy healing Pagan pals!! === === About the Author === Jason D. would like to dedicate this article to Hermes. You can contact the author at mysticjason05 AT yahoo.com. [05.2] ========= ========= FEATURE ARTICLE: ========= YOUR DAILY NUMEROLOGY MOOD ORGANIZER ========= by Vitae Bergman ========= Every day offers you a new vibration for your work or play. If you follow your biorhythms, you have a sense of how your energy is flowing for a particular day. Numerology offers you an alternate means for knowing your mood for a particular day. If you know your Soul Desire Number you can play this game. This energy expression comes from your deepest inner self. It filters through your emotional feelings as it moves, or attempts to move into expression. THIS IS HOW IT WORKS: Combine your Soul Desire number with the current calendar number. If today is December 1, 2005, the energy pattern for the day is calculated thusly: 12/01/2005 = 3+1+7 = 11 = 2. So this is a #2 day. Combine that number with your Soul Desire number, and you have your daily numerology mood number. HOW TO FIND YOUR SOUL DESIRE NUMBER? Each letter in the name you currently go by has a corresponding number. You Soul Desire numbers come from the vowels in your name. Add all the vowel numbers in you name. Reduce that to a single digit. A J S = 1 B K T = 2 C L U = 3 D M V = 4 E N W = 5 F O X = 6 G P Y = 7 H Q Z = 8 I R = 9 My Soul Desire number is #3: Vitae Bergman >i,a,e,e,a >9,1,5,5,1> 21>3 SOUL DESIRE NUMBER AND DAILY NUMBER Now I combine my #3 with a particular day. I'll use December 31, 2005. To arrive at the daily number, I add all the numbers of the date in question: 12/31/2005 and reduce the sum to a single digit. Thus: 12+31+2005>2048>14>5 December 31, 2005, then is a #5 day So, adding my Soul Desire Number, #3 with the date number, #5 yields the #8 energy expression, which has to do with aspects of leadership. This is my mood number. THIS TELLS ME This is my day to take charge of my life situation and myself. This is not a day for me to sit back and let things slide any way they choose. On this day, I can feel confident that my energies are up to the task of organizing myself and even influencing others, whether that be at work or at home in the public arena. My persuasive powers are high. And since my Soul Desire number is #3, which pertains to creative expression, I can let myself use this inner desire quite effectively on such a propitious day. WHAT IS TODAY LIKE FOR YOU? If this is a #1 day for you, your best bet is to focus on yourself and what is important in your life. This is not a day in which you can be highly available for others and their needs. No use in trying. Your mood is going inward. It wants to nourish that Soul Desire quality of yours. Do something for yourself that serves to fulfill your Soul's Desire, or just simply spend some time in contemplation - feel what inspirations come to you regarding your Soul's Desire. If this is a #2 day for you, your mood for the day leans towards cultivating harmonious space - within and well as without. If there is strife in your environment, then you are eager to promote peace. Your need today is to have balance in your life and among those for whom you care. Even strangers will benefit from this mood of yours. This is not a day you are willing to try on new things. If you are a student you are better off reviewing old material rather than learning new material. Same goes for your work. Consolidate old projects; leave new projects for tomorrow. If this is a #3 day for you, then your creative juices are flowing. Now you are ready to tackle anything new. Listen to your inner promptings for inspiration about those creative projects that have bubbled up into your recent nightly dreams. This is a time to let that energy flow out into expression. If you are engaged in business, this is the day to finalize negotiations. Your flexible mind is at its best. In any interaction with others you will do well. This is a good time to initiate agreements. If this is a #4 day for you, your energy wants to go into stabilizing, consolidating, solidifying your world, your situation, your inner landscape. Not a day for emotional upheaval, rather a time for calm assessments. Your energy works best working on your foundations. Those around you will tend to look for support, you seem so strong and capable. And you are. You are the rock today. If this is a #5 day for you, you are eager to be fully active in your work or play. Your energy is high. It's your action day. All that calm assessment of the day before has set the stage for this very active day. Your mood is "Let's get things done!" The world will wonder at your boundless energy. This is a day when you can see your soul's desire getting full expression. Even if you are no fully aware of what that hidden desire actually might be, it seems to come out effortlessly. A good day to pay attention to what and how you are expressing, offering you clues about this desire issue. If you have had a numerology chart made for you, you would have your finger on the pulse. If this is a #6 day for you, your mood leans toward compassionate expressions. You notice a higher degree of sensitivity toward others and their moods. Your inner heart feels a sweet tenderness during this day. You may be given to reminiscing of times when love and romance were the center of your life. You will be open to expressing good feeling to others more readily. If you are typically competitive, your willingness to let the other fellow win or have his way is more in evidence. Everything about you has softened today. Kindliness is your mood. If this is a #7 day for you, your inclination leans toward scholarly activities. Your thinking mind is in high gear. This is a good day to learn new things, to develop new schemes in your work. Your intellect wants to soar. Curiosity and optimism is the hallmark of your energy today. If you are spiritually inclined, your metaphysical studies today will bear remarkable fruit. You mind is open to new insights. If this is a #8 day for you, your energy levels are such that you can lead yourself into new areas of discovery. This is your day to lead a brainstorming session with your colleagues. You can see clearly what needs to be done in your world and you have the power of suggestion working for you as you encourage your team to move forward. All this leadership energy, of course, is in the service of your heart's desire. AND FINALLY If this is a #9 day for you, all your effort of the past eight days are paying off. You've used your energy wisely, following your daily moods instead of attempting to do and be in ways out of sync with the flow of your essence. Consequently, you feel the glow of the #9 energy coming forth form deep within. A benevolent feeling for your fellow man pours forth. This is the kind of day when you are most appreciative of your life and your accomplishments and you are full of gratitude for the life force Source has provided with unconditional love. === === About the Author === Vitae Bergman has been a numerologist for over 25 years. We've grown a bit over the years. We now have an active message area, a large web site with around 700 pages of information (including over 300 book and divination deck reviews), and a monthly email newsletter. To continue to provide and expand these services, The Cauldron needs lots of volunteer help from our members and supporters. Here are some of the things members and supporters can do to help The Cauldron: A Pagan Forum thrive: ===== ===== Actively Participate In Our Message Board ===== While our new message board welcomes readers, we encourage members to actively participate by posting their comments and views in our discussions. One of the easiest ways to help The Cauldron is to actively participate in our message board. The staff especially appreciates members who start new topics for discussion based on their own questions, opinions, or interests. http://www.ecauldron.net/ ===== ===== Articles! Essays! Tutorials! ===== We are in constant need of original, well-written and accurate articles, essays, tutorials, and other written items for both our web site and for our Cauldron and Candle newsletter. There's no real limit on length for web site articles. Here are a few areas in which we always need articles: * information on the beliefs and theology of the various Pagan religions, especially non-Wiccan religions * information on holidays and festivals of the various Pagan religions, especially non-Wiccan religions * recipes for oils, incenses, and food for the various Pagan holidays * magick, spells, and ritual information * herbal information * positive articles on dealing with other faiths * information on historical pagan cultures * editorial/opinion pieces Non-Wiccan material is stressed not because we don't want Wiccan material but because good non-Wiccan material has been hard to find. We have a web form you can use to submit an article for consideration: http://www.ecauldron.com/bnbarticleform.php ===== ===== Book Reviews ===== While The Cauldron receives some review copies from a couple of Pagan publishers, there are many books that can only be reviewed on our web site if a member has a copy and writes a good, objective review. The Cauldron is interested in reviews on the more academic books used by reconstructionist Pagan religions as well as on the books one finds on the Pagan/New Age shelf in the bookstore. We have a web form you can use to submit a book review for consideration: http://www.ecauldron.com/bnbbkreviewform.php ===== ===== Graphic Assistance ===== The Cauldron: A Pagan Forum is purposely a low graphics site as we value page download speed over flashy graphics. However, we are always willing to talk with artists who have ideas for well-designed small graphics (small in both physical dimensions and file size) that might enhance a specific article or page. ===== ===== Invite Your Friends ===== If you have friends or acquaintances who you believe would find The Cauldron: A Pagan Forum useful, please tell them about our site. If you are active in our message board and have friends who might enjoy them or have information to contribute, please invite them. ===== ===== Link To The Cauldron ===== If you have a web site where linking to The Cauldron: A Pagan Forum would be appropriate, simply providing a link to this web site is a big help. Our Link to this Site page explains how you can do this if you need help or want some simple graphic buttons to use: http://www.ecauldron.com/linktous.php ===== ===== Donations ===== As The Cauldron: A Pagan Forum uses as many free services as possible, our need for money to operate our site is currently lower than our need for the many items we list above. However, if you have a few dollars to spare, we would be honored to have your help in paying for our web site. You can donate by using either PayPal or the Amazon Honor System links below (we get about 85% of what you donate). Donate via PayPal http://www.ecauldron.com/donatepaypal.php Donate via Amazon.com http://www.amazon.com/paypage/P3903JRFVQVDN ===== ===== Amazon Purchases ===== The Cauldron: A Pagan Forum also receives a small percentage (usually 5%) from most items purchased from Amazon.com when you go to Amazon.com from one of the links to Amazon on our web site. If you purchase a lot of books, CDs, and other items from Amazon.com as many members do, going to Amazon.com through one of our links when you are going to make a purchase there is a painless way to help fund this web site. http://www.ecauldron.com/zamazon.php If you are a regular user of the US version of Amazon, you can help The Cauldron by replacing the URL of your ebay bookmark in your browser with the above link so that TC gets credit every time you visit Amazon.com. To do this in Internet Explorer or Firefox, find Amazon in your bookmark list. RIGHT click on it and select Properties from the popup menu which will appear. A dialog box describing your bookmark will appear. You'll see the standard Amazon url -- probably http://www.amazon.com/ -- in an edit box (labeled "Location" in FireFox and "URL" in IE). Erase that url completely and replace with one listed above, then click on OK. If you use Amazon UK, you can use this address http://www.ecauldron.com/zamazonuk.php If you use Amazon Canada, you can use this addess: http://www.ecauldron.com/zamazonca.php ===== ===== Ebay Purchases ===== Are you an Ebay user? Ebay has a new program that pays affiliates a small percent of the winning bid if the winning bidder enters ebay from an affiliate link (some like how our Amazon.com affiliate program works). So if you visit the US version ebay via the following link, the Cauldron will get credit for your bids: http://www.ecauldron.com/zebay.php If you are a regular user of the US version of ebay, you can help The Cauldron by replacing the URL of your ebay bookmark in your browser with the above link so that TC gets credit every time you visit ebay. To do this in Internet Explorer or Firefox, find ebay in your bookmark list. RIGHT click on it and select Properties from the popup menu which will appear. A dialog box describing your bookmark will appear. You'll see the standard ebay url -- probably http://www.ebay.com/ -- in an edit box (labeled "Location" in FireFox and "URL" in IE). Erase that url completely and replace with one listed above, then click on OK. ===== ===== Have Questions or Suggestions? ===== If you have specific questions, proposals or other ideas we haven't mentioned here, please email them to rssapphire00@ecauldron.GETRIDOFEME.com. (Unfortunately, Randall has to answer general "Tell me more?" type questions with a request for a more specific question. He's not trying to be rude, he just can't think of anything general and useful to say that isn't said here.)
