I'LL DO WITHOUT, THANKS ========= by Cyn (Labrys) ========= [The following guest editorial was written by Cyn, a long- time member of The Cauldron, for the editorial of the April issue of another newsletter. Cyn said that the publisher rejected it as "too political." When Cyn posted this on The Cauldron's message board, we thought it deserved to be seen by a wider audience and asked if we could reprint it here. Cyn agreed and rewrote the first sentence or two to make it work better in this newsletter. The only problem is that as this editorial is being printed two weeks after it was originally intended to be published in another newsletter, some of the links to news stories in the editorial may no longer be available. You can discuss this editorial on our message board in this thread: http://www.ecauldron.net/cncsocial.php?m=342.1 ] Throughout the month of March, newspaper stories made me think that the April Fool Day pranks had begun early. Some were so utterly "bad dream after Welsh Rabbit" bizarre as to make me pinch myself. Some of the stories I read disturbed more than my equilibrium; my sense of what century I was living in began to rock a bit on its track, too. It's not that I expect everyone to storm the local State House, but I think being aware of some recent trends and cases is a good idea and deserving of thought. The attack on Roe vs. Wade, for instance, began in South Dakota [ http://tinyurl.com/ew4ec ], but won't end there. A legislator in Ohio has wanted to make all abortions illegal since 2005 [ http://tinyurl.com/kx2qs ] and now is chomping at the legal bit. Tennessee now has legislation on the table, that suggests a mother aborting even a child resulting from rape must prove she has been unable "after diligent effort" to notify the "father" [ http://tinyurl.com/gjxlk ] before she can take that step. So, now rapists have a right to make their victims bear their child? Does nobody get a sense of moral vertigo from this? And in Utah, legislators believe a girl's father should know if she is seeking to abort a child, even a child of incest -- even if the father of the girl is the incestuous impregnator! [ http://tinyurl.com/gqacc ] Idaho is likewise concerned with the health of unborn children, so much so they now have a penalty of five years in prison for mothers caught using drugs. Where does that child go while mom is in jail? How would any woman with a drug problem dare come forth for treatment? What desperate measures may frightened women take under such situations? [ http://tinyurl.com/zq4gc ] Distressed and disturbed, I have to wonder if all this vehement concern for the unborn children of America has to do with babies, or with women? Legislators questioned about their hard stances seem to have strange ideas of what constitutes "real" rape, for instance. Was the girl a religious virgin who fought and was "savaged" for instance? A recent and spectacular trial highlights my fears on this subject. An underage girl was gang raped while completely unconscious, [ http://tinyurl.com/fw4af ]: the defense lawyer claimed she consented and "wanted" each and every act of defilement. One of nine defense attorneys wanted the girl put on trial for "assaulting" his clients. Accounts of the trial commentary, the video tape of the young girl getting drunk, passing out, and then being abused are hard to read about. Punishing the victim seemed more the point of this trial. (Links for the strong-stomached [ http://tinyurl.com/pucnz ] and willing to be angry only. [ http://tinyurl.com/oycjk ].) I wonder why portions of America don't see the women in rape trials as victims unless some strenuous definition of rectitude is met? I wonder that unwanted pregnancies -- even rape or incest pregnancies are blithely described as "hard times" by men who do not have to suffer the consequences themselves? I wonder if this is how it began in Afghanistan, a country that once had well- educated urban women who controlled their own lives. I feel that who is defined as an "innocent" rape victim is a slippery slope, when a 16 year old can be savaged all over again in a court room. I feel women are too often painted as people who decide on abortion as easily as they decide on shoe color; and who get painted in the worst shades of scarlet if they assert that "time on planet" is a reason for being able to choose their own priorities over those of an unborn person. I am old enough to be at less risk for pregnancy. I have survived rape. And I am still frightened, more for the young women of the country than for myself. We will need more than a simple self-defense course to stop the slide down over this precipice. We need to think deeply about the rhetoric being used to set in motion changes to women's lives and reproductive rights that could set us much further back than the mere 20th century. After talking to a number of hermetics, pagans and thelemites in the group a split of opinion (sorry about the spelling) has occurred that relates to the way of practicing it. The debate ultimately has come down to this: Is it equally valid given the culture and ways of practicing magic that western society has given us to undertake shamanism through drum work and pathworking or the more traditional way of practicing it through ecstatic states of drumming, drugs and exposure to extreme conditions? * Read (or join in) this discussion: http://www.ecauldron.net/cncmain.php?m=502.1 ===== ===== I Would Love to Key That Truck ===== But I won't. Does your path hold you accountable for immoral thoughts or desires, even if you would never act on them? For example lusting after someone not your spouse, or someone elses spouse, or being jealous and wanting to behave in a catty way towards someone even though you know you would be being just that. Are you required to atone, or elsewise do penance for these thoughts? * Read (or join in) this discussion: http://www.ecauldron.net/cncmain.php?m=492.1 ===== ===== Thou Shalt Clean Thy Room ===== Recently I discovered (or had revealed to me) the concept of "Hearth Pride" as part of my path. Translated into practical terms, this comes out as "Thou shalt clean thy room". Interestingly, since then I have actually gotten much better at actually cleaning my room. You could almost say I do it ... religiously. Just wondering, anyone else here been assigned household chores as worship? * Read (or join in) this discussion: http://www.ecauldron.net/cncmain.php?m=479.1 ===== ===== When is Spellwork Finished? ===== I was just sitting and thinking today, and something interesting (or at least I thought it was) occurred to me. I often don't cast circle when doing spellwork, and thus closing the circle is not how I end my spells. Sometimes the end point is the finishing of a physical object. Sometimes it involves a charging over multiple days. Sometimes it only ends when I stop thinking about it. So basically I got to wondering how other people do this. I'm sure there are many options I have never heard of, and I would like to know what some of them are. So if you do magic, how do you know when your spellwork is completed? * Read (or join in) this discussion: http://www.ecauldron.net/cncmain.php?m=463.1 ===== ===== Eclecticism, Just A Phase? ===== I've heard people say they hesitate to adopt the eclectic label because of the assumptions that seem to go along with it. One of them is that eclecticism is a stage one goes through on the way to finding one's real religion, a phase of the seeker's journey. Staying in it "too long" may even be regarded with a somewhat jaundiced eye, as if it were a mark of spiritual immaturity, or an indication that one was trying to avoid significant decisions. What do you think of that idea? * Read (or join in) this discussion: http://www.ecauldron.net/cncmain.php?m=324.1 ===== ===== Doing Paganism and Magic with Bi-polar Disorder? ===== I was told on another message board that because I have bi-polar disorder I shouldn't be doing spells. The person said it was because I am mentally unstable and that it could only end badly. They suggested I should leave Wicca and Paganism in general. I think it's a load of crap, but I was wondering as to your opinions on the matter. * Read (or join in) this discussion: http://www.ecauldron.net/cncmain.php?m=445.1 ===== ===== Responding to Prayer ===== How do you all respond when someone says "I'll pray for you" or "you'll be in my prayers" when you know what they are really saying is "I'll pray that you abandon your current religion and accept Jesus as your savior"? I've had this happen to me a couple of times on another board (a Scouting board) where people know that I am pagan, and it seems inevitable that when we get into a religious/political discussion where I disagree with the other person's viewpoint (who is almost always a Christian), they seem to always fall back on the old "I'll add you to my prayer list" type of thing. I'm never quite sure how to respond, because I believe that if someone wants to pray for my general well being, that all those prayers produce positive energy, and are welcome. So, I feel like I don't want to sound ungrateful to someone who might be praying for my general well being, but at the same time, I am uncomfortable with the thought of people prayer for me to abandon my religion (when I'm pretty sure that is what they are really doing). I know if I told any of them that I will pray for them to abandon Christianity and turn to enlightenment, they would be mightily offended! (As they should be) So would you: 1. Say thank you and respond that you will also pray for them (my general response, and let them read into it what they will about what I will be praying about for them....) 2. Be explicit and say, "if you want to pray for my well being, thank you. If you want to pray for my conversion, no thank you." 3. Just generally say, "no thank you" to all such responses. * Read (or join in) this discussion: http://www.ecauldron.net/cncmain.php?m=413.1 ===== ===== Why Don't You Chat At The Cauldron? ===== Clearly, this doesn't apply to people who do. :) But if you're at all interested in Pagan chats (or chats with Pagan people), is there any reason you don't join us in chat? Possible answers, by no means exclusive: there's chat? it's at a bad time. I don't like certain people. all chat rooms are pickup bars. etc. I'd like to start really getting chat moving again, and I'd like to know what you are/aren't looking for in a chat room. Let's make it a valuable part of TC! * Read (or join in) this discussion: http://www.ecauldron.net/cncmain.php?m=402.1 [03] ========= ========= PAGAN ANNOUNCEMENTS ========= ===== ===== Ritual for World Change -- April 22, 2006 ===== It's time to change the world. If you would like to contact Mike with comments about his reviews (or about books you would like to have reviewed), you can email Mike at: gleason.mike@ecauldron.GETRIDOFME.com ===== ===== LLEWELLYN'S 2006 WICCA ALMANAC ===== Llewellyn's 2006 Wicca Almanac published 2006 by Llewellyn ISBN 0738703095 288 pages Trade Paperback $8.99 (U.S.) http://www.ecauldron.com/cncbook.php?asin=0738703095 This is an annual review for me. I know some people don't like Llewellyn for a number of reasons. Some of their complaints are valid (waaayy too many "101" books) but irrelevant (if the market didn't support the numbers, they wouldn't be publishing them). Other complaints are only somewhat valid, and some are totally specious ("I don't like ________; Llewellyn publishes her/his books, therefore I won't buy ANY books from Llewellyn."). Putting entire topic aside, I have to say that I am always intrigued by something in each of their annual publications. The almanac section is the one standard from year-to-year. The general categories also remain fairly consistent ("Lifestyles of the Witch and Famous," "Witchcraft D.I.Y.," "Sweep Me Away," "Over the Cauldron," "God Said, Goddess Said," and "The Virtual Witch"), although there is a variety in the authors represented, some are fairly consistent in their appearance, but there are always fresh voices to be heard. The gods know I don't always agree with everything I read, especially with opinion pieces (which many of these are). But even if I don't agree with them they make me think. And, unfortunately, thinking is something which is not actively encouraged in our Western society today. The "News Items" in the almanac section offer little tidbits that you probably didn't catch in the mainstream media. Of course, they are all "dated" by the time they hit print, but they can still inspire interesting thoughts. As far as the articles go, there are nineteen in this year's edition ranging from 7 to 16 pages in length (giving an average of 10 pages), and ranging in subject matter from living lightly and connecting with spirit of your residence to how to deal with the media and a personal remembrance of how one individual got involved with Wicca. There are typographical errors in this book (dropped letters [and occasionally even dropped words], homonymic errors, etc.) but no more than are to be expected. Once again Llewellyn offers an enjoyable, entertaining, and informative almanac. The entries for each day in the almanac section include religious and/or secular observances for the day, moon phase, color and moon sign. This information is fairly basic, but if you want more detailed information, there are specialized publications available. If you are looking for a good, general purpose, Pagan-themed almanac, this is the one to pick up. It is relatively inexpensive, conveniently sized, and a good choice for general use. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ +++ Please support our sponsor +++ NEED PAGAN OR MAGICKAL SUPPLIES? These images do far more to illustrate the Western Mystery Traditions than any text could. That is not to say that this book does not contain written descriptions. It does. But the images, including several sets of Major Arcana of Tarot decks, do a much expanded job. It contains illustrations in a variety of topics - Astrology and Cosmology, Kabbalah and the Tree of Life, Initiation, Magick and the Gods, Secret Societies (a new addition to this revised volume), Sexuality, Alchemy, Tarot, and Symbolist and Visionary Art. These images have almost all been printed before, but this assemblage is, in my experience, unique. The majority of the images are presented in color - some of them quite stunning. On top of everything else this book represents a gathering together in one place of images, any one of which can easily serve as a focus for meditation. Each chapter includes a short introduction (four pages or less) of the material contained within it. And each image is properly placed within its time period, even though these images surely transcend any such limitations. It is difficult to find words to describe this work. The images are gathered from so many times and locations; the writing of the introductory section of each chapter is so succinct; and the overall impression is so overwhelming that it should be approached, I feel, in small doses. To attempt to comprehend it in one or two sittings does a disservice to the work, and to yourself. Allow the images in this book to work their magick on you. Permit them to stimulate new thoughts and inspire changes both in how you perceive yourself and the wider world. The benefits you reap will, most likely, be beyond your current comprehension. This is one of the most visually stunning works I have seen in a very long time. I would have expected a much higher price for the quality, or a much lower quality based on the price. The combination of excellent quality and reasonable price was a very pleasant surprise. If you are interested in symbolic representations of mystical themes, this book belongs in your library. It is a book to be savored and enjoyed on an on-going basis. [05] ========= ========= ARTICLES ========= ===== ===== PHASES OF THE MIND ===== by Stuart Gardiner ===== An observation of the mind reveals 3 distinct phases, the Objective Mind, the Subjective Mind and the Subconcious Mind. In many texts the latter two are often grouped together under the single classification of SubConscious Mind but for this article we shall keep them separate. The Objective Mind is the one with which we are all familiar. When we reason, think or desire we do so with our Objective Mind. When we pay attention and perceive the world around us it is through the Objective Mind we experience and discern. It is the Objective Mind that is so out of control in our lives and the cause of many of our problems. The sum total of our knowledge about the world is largely made up from a lifetime accumulation of our sensory input. The problem is that we process our perceptions based on distorted information of the past and evidence coming from others that is no more reliable than our own. It is quite easy to see this phenomenon at play when some extraordinary event takes place and all the witnesses seem to relate something entirely different and yet all believe in their own unique story. We only have to look at the many different cultures and religions to know that what is right in one place can be wholly wrong in another! Our biased idea of one thing or another gives us a completely unique view of the world around us. We constantly act upon false knowledge and ultimately experience failure or partial success as a result. Despite the shortcomings of the Objective Mind it still has ultimate control over our destiny. It is unfortunate that it is hardly ever fully awake to what is happening in the moment. The demons of the Subjective Mind temporarily take control and swamp our Conscious Mind with immobilising thoughts that prevent us from living right here and now! The subjective mind is the storehouse of memory. It is the place from which dreams are made and the prison where all habits, longings, fears and passions are housed. The Objective Mind comes as a blank sheet at birth but this is not so with the Subjective Mind. You can see this in the instinctive behaviour of all life. The Subjective Mind holds the key to the wisdom of ages past and is at the same time a bizarre world of strange and fearful entities that give rise to our powers of imagination, intended or not. The Subjective Mind would quite willingly take over the Objective Mind if it were not for our conscience. It is in moments of madness we notice a complete lack of conscience. Moments when our protector has been consumed by negative emotions or unhealthy desires and has temporarily abandoned his post. This you will notice happens most often when we dream. We do things in our dreams that we would not ordinarily do in our waking life. The Subjective Mind is responsible for many of our physical and mental ills. Our lives are our thoughts realised. When the demon inhabitants of our Subjective Mind rule without control we suffer the consequences. The Subjective Mind has a great influence on our Objective Mind through memories we have of the past. Simply put, how we deal with and perceive a situation in the present is heavily influenced by our memories and more often than not false knowledge of the past. Because we were not fully awake when we last experienced something we have a distorted view of our current experience. The Subconscious mind is the phase we know so little about. All the involuntary functions of our bodies are from here directed. It has the power to think things into existence just as it did with your body before you ever developed a reasoning mind. It is the seat of creation, truth and wisdom. Quantum physicists have known for sometime that all observable objects are energy configurations and that without observation they don't actually exist. That is, at least in their physical form. They have also come to the conclusion that somehow quantum particles can communicate over vast distances instantaneously. The concepts of space and time are annihilated. There is an innate intelligence at work beyond the constraints of the physical world. The Subconscious Mind is our link to this intelligence and we act upon it with the power of thought. Before we are able to make massive changes in our lives it is this part of the mind with which we must learn to communicate. When we analyse each phase of the mind a new world of possibilities is opened up. Strong, clear and focused thoughts ensure our desires are materialised. A fully awake Conscious Mind experiences the world anew. We see everyday situations in a new light and are not so influenced by previous experiences. Disciplines are no longer seen as chores as each task is seen as if we were doing it for the first time. They in turn become habit and become part of our lives. We are no longer slaves to our past and fearful of our future. We are free to make our choice in this moment here and now. We grow in every way we intend! === === About the Author === Stuart is the author of Blog http://flamelssecret.blogspot.com and is a long term student of practical philosophy. ===== ===== WHAT IS YOUR SUBCONSCIOUS TELLING YOU ABOUT YOUR HOME? ===== by Melissa Lord ===== Are there areas of your home that you try to ignore? Maybe you tell yourself that you will attend to it later. It could be a broken doorknob, a leaky faucet, or even a pile of clutter. We all have these blind spots in our everyday visual field. What does this mean? We may look at something everyday, and yet miss its apparent truth. This is especially true in the home because we are more connected to every object in the space. This is where Feng Shui comes into play and can help us to see this truth. Feng Shui is about creating a harmonious environment that allows the most benefit for the occupants. It lifts the spirits, calms the nerves, and enhances the joy in life. Feng Shui is known as the art of placement. This concept came into being over 4,000 years ago in China, and was originally developed by observing the flow and rhythm of nature. Today, it is being practiced around the world. Acceptance of Feng Shui in the western part of the world is rapidly expanding and the realization of its benefits is well known. When starting to use the application of Feng Shui in a space, there are many areas to review. The shape of the building, layout of the rooms, furniture placement, and colors are among the many things to assess. There are also some basic principles to consider: * Take a look at the entrance. How do you feel when you see it? Does it make you feel welcome and happy to be there or do you feel like running the other way? The entranceway is the first impression that you get about a home or office. It should be beautiful, inviting, and open, both inside and out. * Where is your bed placed in the bedroom? The placement of the bed can make a difference in getting a good night's sleep or tossing and turning throughout the night. The bed should be positioned facing the largest part of the room and the door, without being in direct alignment with the door. This will help to promote better sleep by keeping the central nervous system calm. It also allows you to benefit from the expansive energy within the room. * How many items do you have in your home that you dislike? It is important to love everything in your space. Keep in mind the joy that you feel when you are around something or someone that you truly love. By surrounding yourself with things that bring you joy, you further incorporate that feeling into your life. * Electronic equipment such as TV's, computers, alarm clocks, and cell phones emit energy known as EMF's (Electromagnetic fields). There are studies that show prolonged exposure to this energy weakens and drains the immune system. It is best to keep these items at least 4 feet away from the body while sleeping or working for long periods of time. * Clutter is the biggest block of energy that exists. Stagnation energy is created by clutter, and getting rid of this clutter allows the energy to rise and flow again. The motionless energy from clutter causes the occupant's energy to also stagnate. This leads to such problems as procrastination, as well as lack of concentration, clarity, productivity, memory, and creativity. Prolonged exposure can even cause depression due to the heaviness of the energy it creates. If clearing a big pile of clutter get too overwhelming, try clearing just 3 things a day for 9, 18, or 27 days. You will most likely find that once you start this process that you do not want to stop. This is because physical clutter symbolizes mental clutter. So, by clearing the physical clutter in your home or office, you will notice a difference in your mental clarity. Your mood will lift and you will be able to think more clearly. This should be your first goal in the feng shui process. Until the clutter has been dealt with, no feng shui adjustment will be nearly as effective. The application of these and other Feng Shui adjustments, when used together, may be thought of as a non-pharmaceutical antidepressant. A qualified Feng Shui Practitioner will be able to further evaluate your home and determine the best adjustments to enhance the harmonious energy within the space. === === About the Author === Melissa Lord is a Certified Feng Shui Practitioner serving residential and commercial clients in the New York/New Jersey metropolitan area. She calls it FlameKeeping. This regular column will present articles on FlameKeeping, many taken from HeartShadow's FlameKeeping blog at: http://flamekeeping.blogspot.com/ ===== ===== What is FlameKeeping? ===== FlameKeeping is a religious path that celebrates the Divine Within and the Divine Without, the nature of the Universe being that of a self-aware, Divine Entity, of which we are all parts. The basic nature of the Flame is that we are all Divine, and we must seek inside ourselves to find that Divine Nature. When we see the Divine in ourselves and in each other, we find we have the potential to make the world a better place through improving ourselves. We are all individual, part of a group, and a piece of the Indivisible Divine Universe. There is no contradiction here, even though it appears to function in paradox, because our individuality is not threatened by being part of something greater as well. Our life functions as individual, but what we do radiates outward to the Universe, and then radiates back to ourselves. No action occurs in a vacuum. Being a FlameKeeper involves improvement of self, not monetarily but spiritually. We need to find ourselves: first who we are, then who we want to become. We do have the potential to change ourselves and become better than we are. The path to finding our better selves is difficult, but we can support each other and find our own centers. FlameKeeping is a path that involves self-improvement with the goal of improving both oneself and the world around one. It recognizes that we all live in embedded relationships, and cannot separate ourselves from the world around us. The goals are local, but the focus is upon the entire Universe. [07] ========= ========= SOFTWARE GADGETS: THE COLUMN ========= Interesting Items From The Software Gadgets Blog ========= http://softwaregadgets.gridspace.net/ ========= The Software Gadgets Blog aims to present a different "software gadget" every weekday. A software gadget is a program or addon that is both interesting and useful -- and often free. This column highlights three of the programs listed recently. Many more were listed and you'll find more gadgets like these added every week at the Software Gadgets Blog at: http://softwaregadgets.gridspace.net/ ===== ===== UTORRENT -- A TINY, POWERFUL BITTORRENT CLIENT ===== If you think of peer-to-peer file sharing at all, you probably think of it in connection with downloading music. While this is fraught with copyright issues, a number of major companies and open source projects with huge files to provide for download (and the huge bandwidth bills associated with providing large files over the Internet) have turned to a different type of peer-to- peer file-sharing to share the bandwidth: the BitTorrent protocol. BitTorrent allows everyone downloading the file at one time to share the bandwidth load by allowing others to download parts of the file they already have. With enough people downloading at once -- as often happens right after a new version of a popular software program is released -- some amazing download speeds can be had at only a small cost in bandwidth to any individual downloader. There are a number of BitTorrent clients available for Windows, when I need a BitTorrent client, I use uTorrent. It's a tiny program (less than 200K), low resource usage so it doesn't impact everything else you are trying to do on your computer, and while it lots of features, it is still very easy to use. If you come across a site with a BitTorrent download and need a client, don't panic or decide you really didn't want the program after all as uTorrent is a quick download that will have you downloading the file you want in no time at all. You don't even have to install uTorrent, just download it and run it. Best of all, uTorrent is under constant development, but most releases are free of major bugs -- something few developers can claim. Major features at a glance (from the uTorrent web site): * Multiple simultaneous downloads * Configurable bandwidth scheduler * Global and per-torrent speed limiting * Quick-resumes interrupted transfers * RSS Downloader * Trackerless support (Mainline DHT) Rating: 5 Operating System: Windows License: Freeware Price: Free Web Site: http://www.utorrent.com/ ===== ===== GLASS2K -- MAKE WINDOWS TRANSPARENT THE EASY WAY ===== You've probably seen fancy programs that allow you to make windows transparent on Windows 2000 or Windows XP. Some come with fancy prices, others are hard to use or have more features than the next version of Microsoft Word. Glass2K is a simple program that does just one thing: make windows on the desktop transparent. From the website: Glass2k is a small little program that allows Windows 2000/XP users to make any window transparent. Right-click on any window or press the keyboard shortcuts (Control + Shift + [0-9]) to make any window transparent. It's that simple. The latest version will remember transparency settings by window and allow you to set the transparency of the Windows Taskbar. Making windows transparent is more eye candy than useful (at least in my opinion), but lots of people enjoy eye candy on their desktop. Be sure to scroll down one the Glass2k web page to learn how to use the program. Rating: 4 stars Operating System: Windows 2K and XP Special Requirements: Visual Basic 6 runtime (you probably have it) License: Freeware Price: Free Version Reviewed: 0.9.2 Web Site: http://www.chime.tv/products/glass2k.shtml ===== ===== CUBE -- AN OPEN SOURCE FIRST PERSON SHOOTER ===== First Person Shooters (FPS) have been a mainstay of gaming since Castle Wolfenstein 3D arrived in the early 1990s. So it's not surprising that several attempts at completely free and open source FPS have been made. Cube is probably the most successful of these efforts. From the Cube web site: Cube is an open source multiplayer and singleplayer first person shooter game built on an entirely new and very unconventional engine. Cube is a landscape-style engine that pretends to be an indoor FPS engine, which combines very high precision dynamic occlusion culling with a form of geometric mipmapping on the whole world for dynamic LOD for configurable fps & graphic detail on most machines. Uses OpenGL & SDL. To be honest, I have no idea what most of the second sentence in that quote means. I think it should mean "great first person shooter." I do know that Cube is a lot of fun in single player mode. I'm not much of a multiplayer FPS type (honesty in blogging time: that's because I am so bad at it), but I enjoy single player FPS games as they are great for taking out one frustrations by shooting everything in sight. Cube lets you do that and that's all I ask. It does what others ask of it as well as a modder community has grown up around Cube, just as it has around the better commercial FPS games. The last version of Cube was released in August 2005 and work has begun on a next generation Cube called Sauerbraten. Rating: 4.0 Operating System: Windows (also Linux and Mac OS) License: Open Source (ZLIB License) Price: Free Version Reviewed: 2005_08_29 Web Site: http://www.cubeengine.com/ [08] ========= ========= From the Spell Grimoire: ========= HERBAL BEAUTY CHARM ========= You need: 1 six-inch square of golden cloth 1 seven-inch square of green lace 1 teaspoon of witch hazel bark or tincture 1 teaspoon of cardamom seeds 1 teaspoon grains of paradise 1 teaspoon basil 1 teaspoon caraway seeds 1 inch piece of dried ginger root and one of powdered icing sugar 1 inch piece of cinnamon stick 13 apple seeds 1 piece of rose quartz 1 garnet Red ribbon to make tiny red ribbon roses Lay out the gold cloth squarely on top of the lace. In the center sprinkle the witch hazel, cardamom, grains of paradise, basil, and caraway. Hold the sugar ginger in your hands and focus on your inner beauty; see it as ray of light making its way into your aura. Place the sugar ginger on top of the herbs. Add the cinnamon stick, the apple seeds, the rose quartz, and the garnet. Bring the corners of the cloth and the lace up to a bundle; wrap three times with the ribbon. Tie three knots. Put the ribbon rose stems directly over the ribbon and wrap the ribbon ends three more times, tying three more knots to secure the ribbon roses to the sachet. Trim any ragged ends. Raise energy and charge the sachet, saying: Treasures without, Treasures within the glamour comes from my heart, Beauty without, Beauty within, Never from me to part. You can use this charm to "fluff up" your aura. This combination of herbs works to give you not only radiance, but also increased attractiveness and self-confidence. Keep the sachet on your altar or near your bed where you can see it daily. === === About This Spell === This spell is taken from The Cauldron's Spell Grimoire, a collection of basic spells available on The Cauldron: A Pagan Forum's web site. You'll find more spells at: http://www.ecauldron.com/spells/index.php [09] ========= ========= Pagan Webmaster: ========= SELLING YOUR ART ONLINE - WEBSITE TIPS FOR ARTISTS ========= [If you are running -- or thinking of running a web site (Pagan-related or not), you will find more articles, reviews, and other useful information at the following sites: The Cauldron's Pagan Webcrafting http://www.ecauldron.com/web/index.php The Cheap Web Hosting Report http://www.cheapwebhostingreport.com/ The Frugal Webmaster Blog http://www.frugalwebmaster.net/index.html ] If you plan to sell your art online with your own unique website, my advice is simple: Be Different! There are hundreds of artist websites online today that are all making the same mistakes. The first problem I would like to note, is the use of long multimedia presentations that artists are incorporating into their websites. I don't think there is anything more frustrating then arriving at a website and waiting for this huge multimedia presentation to download and play. The artist may think it's cool or adds something to their work, but in all actuality, it only frustrates impatient surfers. Not all Internet users have super fast cable or DSL connections. Many are still using dial up modems and if they have to wait for something to download, they will simply leave and visit your competition. There are also sites that insist on putting unrelated banner ads or other unrelated advertising on their websites. Just the other day I was doing a search for original watercolor art. The first website I arrived at had a big banner at the top of the website advertising a dating site. I am not sure how dating is related to watercolors? This is simply a distraction and you are immediately sending visitors off your website. If you are going to advertise on your website, make sure it's related to the theme of your website and is helpful to your visitors. Do not make it the very first thing they see when they arrive at your home page. You need to catch your visitor's attention right away. This means putting your most important information near the top of your website in plain view. Your goal is to draw your visitor into your site immediately with a compelling headline so that they stay long enough to check out what you have to offer. Once you draw them in with a good headline, you must then direct them to take an action. That could be to subscribe to your newsletter, or to check out your latest product(s). Keep your site navigation consistent throughout your entire site. This means having the same navigation links in the same order on every page of your website. Your goal is to make it as easy as possible for your visitors to get from one place to the next, not to confuse them. Make sure your visitors can easily contact you. Put a link to a contact page on every page of your site. If you have testimonials, use them. Testimonials are awesome sales tools. People love to hear good reviews about a product or products they are about to purchase. It really does boost sales. If you have ever received testimonials from customers, highlight a few of them on your home page in clear view. If you do not have testimonials yet, contact people that have purchased from you in the past and ask if they could provide feedback on the product they purchased for inclusion on your website. Make sure they know how you plan to use their testimonial, and ask if you can site their name with the testimonial. Start an opt-in newsletter. If you do not already have a method for collecting your visitors email addresses, then you may be losing sales. Many people who first come to your site will usually leave without making a purchase. It is important therefore to collect as many email addresses as possible so that you can follow up with your visitors. You could send out an announcement to your list of subscribers whenever you have a new piece for sale. If you regularly attend art or craft shows, you could send out an email and let your subscribers know when and where. You could also send out surveys or questionnaires to your list to get a better idea as to the type of products they are interested in purchasing. Make certain that you have a variety of different payment options for your customers, especially payment by credit card. Studies have shown that sites, which accept credit card payments, have significantly more sales. Use a service like PayPal to accept credit cards from your website. It's free and easy to setup. Make sure you have detailed purchasing and shipping instructions in place. Have a good refund policy. When your customer receives your product, it may not be exactly what they anticipated. By having a good refund policy upfront, you will gain your customers trust and they will be more comfortable making a purchase, especially if they are parting with a lot of money. Include a "Privacy Policy". Internet users are a paranoid bunch. People are still somewhat reluctant to part with personal information, so it is your job to make them feel at ease when they use your website. In a nutshell, a privacy policy clearly states what you do with users personal information. What kind of information do you collect from your visitors? What do you do with that information? Do you share it with anyone? If you are not sure how to create a privacy policy, visit the following website to access an easy to use Privacy Policy Generator: http://www.the-dma.org/privacy/creating.shtml. Include a "Terms of Use" section. This section outlines the terms and conditions for using your website. For instance, you probably want to restrict visitors from copying or reproducing the images on your website. You would put that in your Terms of Use section. When adding images of your products, always use thumbnails that can be clicked to show a larger image, so that your pages download quickly. If the larger image is a big file, let the visitor know that they may have to wait for the picture to load. Avoid putting traffic counters on your site. Counters make your site appear amateurish. If your site is fairly new, and your traffic is not yet established, you are broadcasting this to everyone that arrives at your site. If you need to track your website statistics, check with your hosting company. You may already have a good website statistics program included. Choose a basic color scheme and only one or two different fonts. If you go overboard on color and use too many different fonts, your site will look out of balance and amateurish. Your website does not have to be a work of art. You are trying to sell your art, not your website. Use a light background, preferably white, with dark text, preferably black. Don't use images or textures for your background. This makes it difficult for your visitor to read the text on your site. Avoid adding music to your site. You may think it sounds nice to include your favorite songs when your page loads, but not everyone will agree. If they find the music annoying, they will leave. Don't make your visitor have to scroll horizontally to view information on your website. Web surfers are lazy. Most hate to even scroll up and down let alone left and right. Avoid animated graphics and scrolling or flashing text. This only distracts your visitors. Put prices on all of your products. If people have to contact you to find out the price of something, they will more often than not leave and look elsewhere. Make sure your site works in all the major browsers. The most popular browser today is Internet Explorer, but there are a good amount of surfers who use Netscape, Opera, and Firefox. Check out http://www.anybrowser.com/siteviewer.html. They have a great tool that enables you to see what your site looks like in various browsers. Lastly, make your website personal. Speak to your visitors. Let them know who you are and what your art or craft is all about. Educate and enlighten. Include a step-by-step article or demonstration on how your work is created. If people have more of a connection with you and your art, they will be more comfortable buying from you. === === About the Author === Ralph Serpe is Webmaster and founder of http://www.sellingartnews.com/ Sell Your Art News provides resources to help artist's begin a successful career selling their art or crafts. You'll find more recipes at: http://www.ecauldron.com/cookbook/index.php [11] ========= ========= Cauldron Info ========= SUPPORT THE CAULDRON BY VOLUNTEERING TO HELP ========= The Cauldron: A Pagan Forum was founded in December 1997 to provide a friendly but serious discussion area for Pagans on the Internet. We've grown a bit over the years. We now have an active message area, a large web site with around 700 pages of information (including over 300 book and divination deck reviews), and a monthly email newsletter. To continue to provide and expand these services, The Cauldron needs lots of volunteer help from our members and supporters. Here are some of the things members and supporters can do to help The Cauldron: A Pagan Forum thrive: ===== ===== Actively Participate In Our Message Board ===== While our new message board welcomes readers, we encourage members to actively participate by posting their comments and views in our discussions. One of the easiest ways to help The Cauldron is to actively participate in our message board. The staff especially appreciates members who start new topics for discussion based on their own questions, opinions, or interests. http://www.ecauldron.net/mb/ ===== ===== Articles! Essays! Tutorials! ===== We are in constant need of original, well-written and accurate articles, essays, tutorials, and other written items for both our web site and for our Cauldron and Candle newsletter. There's no real limit on length for web site articles. Here are a few areas in which we always need articles: * information on the beliefs and theology of the various Pagan religions, especially non-Wiccan religions * information on holidays and festivals of the various Pagan religions, especially non-Wiccan religions * recipes for oils, incenses, and food for the various Pagan holidays * magick, spells, and ritual information * herbal information * positive articles on dealing with other faiths * information on historical pagan cultures * editorial/opinion pieces Non-Wiccan material is stressed not because we don't want Wiccan material but because good non-Wiccan material has been hard to find. We have a web form you can use to submit an article for consideration: http://www.ecauldron.com/bnbarticleform.php ===== ===== Book Reviews ===== While The Cauldron receives some review copies from a couple of Pagan publishers, there are many books that can only be reviewed on our web site if a member has a copy and writes a good, objective review. The Cauldron is interested in reviews on the more academic books used by reconstructionist Pagan religions as well as on the books one finds on the Pagan/New Age shelf in the bookstore. We have a web form you can use to submit a book review for consideration: http://www.ecauldron.com/bnbbkreviewform.php ===== ===== Graphic Assistance ===== The Cauldron: A Pagan Forum is purposely a low graphics site as we value page download speed over flashy graphics. However, we are always willing to talk with artists who have ideas for well-designed small graphics (small in both physical dimensions and file size) that might enhance a specific article or page. ===== ===== Invite Your Friends ===== If you have friends or acquaintances who you believe would find The Cauldron: A Pagan Forum useful, please tell them about our site. If you are active in our message board and have friends who might enjoy them or have information to contribute, please invite them. ===== ===== Link To The Cauldron ===== If you have a web site where linking to The Cauldron: A Pagan Forum would be appropriate, simply providing a link to this web site is a big help. Our Link to this Site page explains how you can do this if you need help or want some simple graphic buttons to use: http://www.ecauldron.com/linktous.php ===== ===== Donations ===== As The Cauldron: A Pagan Forum uses as many free services as possible, our need for money to operate our site is currently lower than our need for the many items we list above. However, if you have a few dollars to spare, we would be honored to have your help in paying for our web site. You can donate by using either PayPal or the Amazon Honor System links below (we get about 85% of what you donate). Donate via PayPal http://www.ecauldron.com/donatepaypal.php Donate via Amazon.com http://www.amazon.com/paypage/P3903JRFVQVDN ===== ===== Amazon Purchases ===== The Cauldron: A Pagan Forum also receives a small percentage (usually 5%) from most items purchased from Amazon.com when you go to Amazon.com from one of the links to Amazon on our web site. If you purchase a lot of books, CDs, and other items from Amazon.com as many members do, going to Amazon.com through one of our links when you are going to make a purchase there is a painless way to help fund this web site. http://www.ecauldron.com/zamazon.php If you are a regular user of the US version of Amazon, you can help The Cauldron by replacing the URL of your ebay bookmark in your browser with the above link so that TC gets credit every time you visit Amazon.com. To do this in Internet Explorer or Firefox, find Amazon in your bookmark list. RIGHT click on it and select Properties from the popup menu which will appear. A dialog box describing your bookmark will appear. You'll see the standard Amazon url -- probably http://www.amazon.com/ -- in an edit box (labeled "Location" in FireFox and "URL" in IE). Erase that url completely and replace with one listed above, then click on OK. If you use Amazon UK, you can use this address http://www.ecauldron.com/zamazonuk.php If you use Amazon Canada, you can use this addess: http://www.ecauldron.com/zamazonca.php ===== ===== Ebay Purchases ===== Are you an Ebay user? Ebay has a new program that pays affiliates a small percent of the winning bid if the winning bidder enters ebay from an affiliate link (some like how our Amazon.com affiliate program works). So if you visit the US version ebay via the following link, the Cauldron will get credit for your bids: http://www.ecauldron.com/zebay.php If you are a regular user of the US version of ebay, you can help The Cauldron by replacing the URL of your ebay bookmark in your browser with the above link so that TC gets credit every time you visit ebay. (Unfortunately, Randall has to answer general "Tell me more?" type questions with a request for a more specific question. He's not trying to be rude, he just can't think of anything general and useful to say that isn't said here.)
