You are receiving this issue because you subscribed. To learn how to unsubscribe, see the last section of this newsletter. Are you an Ebay user? Ebay has a new program that pays affiliates a small percent of the winning bid if the winning bidder enters ebay from an affiliate link (some like how our Amazon.com affiliate program works). So if you visit the US version ebay via the following link, the Cauldron will get credit for your bids: http://www.ecauldron.com/zebay.php If you are a regular user of the US version of ebay, you can help The Cauldron by replacing the URL of your ebay bookmark in your browser with the above link so that TC gets credit every time you visit ebay. To do this in Internet Explorer or Firefox, find ebay in your bookmark list. RIGHT click on it and select Properties from the popup menu which will appear. A dialog box describing your bookmark will appear. You'll see the standard ebay url -- probably http://www.ebay.com/ -- in an edit box (labeled "Location" in FireFox and "URL" in IE). Erase that url completely and replace with one listed above, then click on OK. If you use Amazon.com regularly, you can do the same thing with your Amazon bookmark, replace the standard Amazon address with http://www.ecauldron.com/zamazon.php (or http://www.ecauldron.com/zamazonuk.php if you use the UK version of Amazon or http://www.ecauldron.com/zamazonca.php if you use the Canadian version of Amazon. Thanks and a tip of ye olde pointy black witch's cap. There were a few minor glitches in the process, but nothing major. There are a few major bugs in 0.6.1, the most noticable is that message search is broken. These bugs should be fixed in 0.6.2 which is being tested by the Beehive developers now. ===== ===== NEW STAFF MEMBER ===== The Cauldron: A Pagan Forum is pleased to announce that Eihdos has been promoted from Threadstarter to Assistant Webmaster where she will be helping Randall maintain (and improve) The Cauldron's web site. ===== ===== RECORD NUMBER OF MESSAGES IN SEPTEMBER ===== The new version of Beehive Forums gives us monthly message counts again. We had 11,527 posts in September -- a new record -- which gives us almost 82,500 messages posted during 2005. Our message board members are a very talkative group. [02] ========= ========= CAULDRON EVENTS ========= by The Cauldron: A Pagan Forum Staff ========= ===== ===== OCTOBER CAULDRON CHALLENGE ===== On a forum like this, it should be no surprise that the Challenges occasionally include research. :) October's is again research-related, but this time the field is going to be more limited than it has been previously. This month, your Challenge is to choose a religion you don't know much about and research it. You don't need to go in-depth here, and you don't have to be an expert by the end of the month; I'm expecting that for the most part this will be a small, introductory effort. Also, note that you are not being asked to consider conversion to the religion you choose to research. If you're headed in that direction, that's great, and blessings to the path--but no one should feel like they're being asked to convert. At least not by me. :) Which religion are you going to research? (Thank you to Sasha for suggesting this one!) http://www.ecauldron.net/cncboard.php?m=7177.1 ===== ===== MUX Month ===== The entire month of October is MUX MONTH! Catch us in the MUX every day (no official times, just people in and out), learn to use the MUX, build yourself a house, chat with other Cauldronites, have a good time! We'll schedule a few scheduled chats with topics later in the month, and have a big Halloween festival near the end (I hear whispers there may be a haunted house) and perhaps a Samhain observance (depending on who we can get to organize one)! So c'mon in - the water's fine! Here are a few of the more interesting recent discussions. It's not too late to join in. Thanks to Bloglet, you can now receive an email every night on days we post new site news items to the main page of The Cauldron's web site. These emails contain a link to the new item and the first couple of lines of the news text. But I believe words and how they are used are powerful. They can shape thought and action. This question is one I re-visit (and it has been discussed here) many times. It's about the word 'religion'. I have no problem with religions of any stripe (as long as live sacrifice or huge cash donations are not involved). The problem is, I see a trend that while slowly growing for quite a while, is now at the 'top of the class'. Which is fine. But it puts quite a number of people out in the cold. I spent quite a while this morning reading and re-reading the definitions here and other places as to what constitutes 'paganism'. Of course , the word religion came up a lot,i.e. "Paganism is a term for a number of religions" etc. Here's the twist: What if one 'self-identifies' with paganism, but does not consider what they do a 'religion'. Following that logic, one can't call themselves a pagan. I've noted a number of letters to beginners lately stating 'paganism is a religion'. Or, a number of posts with "What does your religion ask, tell, require of you" or "How do you see your religion in these terms ________" etc., etc. I realize that for a lot of people here, this question is irrelevant. But it's important for those like myself who see this trend that all paganism can be neatly tucked in the box marked 'religion (s)' to understand if this is where 'paganism' stands in the world (at least the Western World) now. Also, it causes one to pause before putting input into a thread or one has to preface everything with "Well, I don't have a 'religion', do I still have a say?" (yes, I know one does, what I mean is one gets the feeling after awhile that they are somewhere they don't belong, or have to 'ask permission', KWIM?) So, do most people consider what they do 'religion'? Is a 'Chaos magician' following a religion? Is 'Reconstructionism' in whole 'religion'? Is the belief and crafts which some follow which has been given the nomen 'witchcraft' , a religion? Are Ceremonial Magicians (priests or acolytes) of a religion and would it be the Christian religion or a variant of it or something else entirely? If all one does is magic, is that 'religion'? Of course, the answer is no, and yet it seems this is changing. Magic is something that can 'accompany' a religion , but cannot stand on it's own. (or, so some say). And so forth. Is it all 'religion' now? And please, this is a serious question and one that is being talked about among quite a few people. I am prepared for the 'what does it matter?' response, but it's a 'bigger' question, not just personal to me, but a question of what 'space' paganism occupies now in the culture. * Read (or join in) this discussion: http://www.ecauldron.net/cncboard.php?m=7222.1 ===== ===== Do Souls Have A Gender/Sex? ===== I'm in the process of reading a fictional story about Ceasar's life and there was a scene where Socrates is being quoted about how all souls are not only the image of God, but are female. Well, that made me stop and ponder: Do souls have a sex? I guess I've always just took it for granted that because I'm female, then my soul must be female...it is me, after all. How do you feel? Is your soul the same sex as your body is, no sex at all (a nice ball of light), or could it even be a hermaphrodite? * Read (or join in) this discussion: http://www.ecauldron.net/cncboard.php?m=7171.1 ===== ===== Hiding Your Faith? ===== Read about the turmoil in Iraq and you're bound to come up with a reference to Islam's two main factions: the Sunnis and the Shi'ites. One controversial practice of the Shi'ites is taqiyyah, which basically means hiding or denouncing your faith outwardly when under duress. For example, if you are under threat of torture, Shi'a doctrine holds it permissible to deny being a Muslim, as long as you still believe in your heart that you are. So what about Pagan religions (and anyone else who wants to reply)? I understand that they face discrimination and there are Pagans in the 'broom closet'. 1. Does your faith allow you to deceive others in such a way? How do your god(s) feel? 2. If your faith doesn't address it, then do your own personal ethics allow it? How do you draw the line between when it is and is not acceptable? 3. Do you feel such an action "damages" your faith in some way? 4. Which is worse (or is there no difference?): denying something you believe in, or professing belief in something you do not believe in? * Read (or join in) this discussion: http://www.ecauldron.net/cncboard.php?m=7141.1 ===== ===== How Real Is Trad History? ===== The more I look into this question the more confusing it gets. Every now and again I find someone either on the net or off it who claims to be part of an ancient magical tradition which goes back hundreds if not thousands of years. Occasionally it's a family trad or attributed to a group (witches normally) who come from a specific area or it may be a claim made by one or two individuals who then go on to start a trad. Initially I rejected most of it as make believe. I know the history of witch trials in the UK and nothing that's mentioned bears any resemblance to BTW. But then I read Doreen Valiente's "The Search for Old Dorothy" as an appendix to the Farrar's A Witch's Bible Complete and it does seem to back up the idea that there was a tradition of some sort in the New Forest before Gardner. So what documentary evidence do people know of for their trads? * Read (or join in) this discussion: http://www.ecauldron.net/cncboard.php?m=7124.1 ===== ===== Have The Gods Changed, Or Is It Us? ===== I'm late (as always) to the thread "Just Say No to the Gods..." and I'm still working my way through the fascinating responses, so somebody stop me if this has already come up. It seems that most folks responding to that thread didn't perceive their gods as "punishing" them per se (again, correct me if I'm mischaracterizing the responses), and it struck me that this is in marked contrast to how folks perceived their gods in ancient times; in those cultures, punishment by the gods was very much possible. So how do we explain the discrepancy? For those of you who worship the gods of ancient pantheons, are these exactly the same gods? Have they changed their ways? Lost the power to punish? Or have we changed...or has our perception of their ways changed? It also struck me that much the same shift might be happening in much (but not all*) Judeo-Christian belief. I know little about their bible in detail, but I've heard that their God is more on the vengeful side in the Old Testament, but more on the loving side in the New Testament (again, apologies if I'm oversimplifying or just plain getting wrong). Moreover, where once folks might point to their tribulations as God punishing them for their sins, that mode of thinking doesn't seem to crop up much these days. *The one exception seems to be when misfortune strikes others, esp. others who are unpopular. Then, some folks seem all too willing to attribute it to God punishing their foes. (Case in point: The right-wing "Christian" group Repent America says Hurricane Katrina and the downfall of New Orleans was God's punishment on that city for hosting the annual gay party Southern Decadence.) (But don't pagans sometimes indulge in the same kind of thinking? Something awful happens to someone who did you wrong, and you might see it, rightly or wrongly, as your gods punishing them.) So have the gods changed, or have we changed, or what? * Read (or join in) this discussion: http://www.ecauldron.net/cncboard.php?m=7091.1 ===== ===== Don't Attack Silver Ravenwolf ===== It honestly disgusts me to see people who claim to practice the craft sending judgment upon another. Silver Ravenwolf may not teach the type of magic a coven does but there are many ways and forms to reach the same end. I am a solitary, I focus one what my energy can do, not what other peoples' can do for me. Perhaps it would be wise to think before opening your mouth and inserting your foot and focus on all the facts first. There are two rules that all Wicca practices that you have broken in this ridicule, the rule of three, and do as you will but harm to none. You have broken these two very vital rules. If teaching a young person, be that a teen or other, makes her a bad person then perhaps you would like to tell generational practitioners that what they do is also bad. Again think before opening your mouth. * Read (or join in) this discussion: http://www.ecauldron.net/cncboard.php?m=7022.1 [04] ========= ========= CAULDRON REVIEWS ========= Most of The Cauldron's book reviews are now written by Mike Gleason. [05-1] ========= ========= FEATURE ARTICLE: ========= Slow Harvest ========= by Garnet ========= It's harvest time now. Back home, my mother's kitchen overflows with tomatoes until they're almost underfoot. Here, my friends and I go apple picking and enjoy fresh cider. But there's another harvest going on, a more metaphorical one. This is a fairly standard idea, to map the seasons of the year onto the seasons of our lives. We look for the results of our actions, both positive and negative, and celebrate good returns. But sometimes we forget that change doesn't come in a few months time. I didn't always understand this. Until recently, I thought of more immediate results. I could understand a year, but I couldn't quite see the pattern of changes and consequences over several. But when I returned to my magical practice, and became Pagan, I started to understand the chain of events that had led me here not broken intervals but a continous story -- a story that is still evolving and will be for the rest of my life. I started doing magic with my friends when I was younger. I quickly learned that I could teach, and find others who would be interested. Our group grew. But we were teenagers, with all the turmoil that implies. Our group fell apart, and I stopped practicing. But I still had the instinct to instruct. So I began to informally mentor some people who were a few years younger than me. I had always appreciated the guidance of older people, especially those who were old enough to have a little more experience, but still close enough to my age to be able to relate. But we still weren't mature, and things fell apart. I thought I had failed again. And then, a few years after I had given up hope of positive results, I began to realize that I had succeeded. The people I had mentored went on to mentor others. Years ago, I had introduced my friend to magic, and she introduced one of her friends, and when we came back to practicing, we brought a lot more maturity. It took time, but I had found the harvest. I sometimes see instructions for spells begun at the new moon and meant to show results at the full moon. Certainly there are times when quick results are desireable. But sometimes results come more slowly. The will we put out into the world works subtly sometimes, until one day we look back and say, Oh, I guess it worked. In my area, the leaves are beginning to fall. Slowly but surely, we are approaching winter, and the end of this year's harvest. But even in this time of death may be the beginnings of something new. Look for results, for continuity, for almost-forgotten hope. The harvest will come, although slowly. === === About the Author === Garnet is a member of The Cauldron: A Pagan Forum and is one of the people responsible for keeping our "Year of Crafting" on target. [05-2] ========= ========= FEATURE ARTICLE: ========= Candle Magic ========= by Summer Fey Foovay ========= Probably since the first candle was lit by an early Egyptian (or Roman, depending on how picky you want to be about what makes a "candle") candles have been a part of ritual and magic. The ancient peoples considered the flame a live entity and the light and warmth it shed energy which added to the energy of the people, or the spellcaster, to take their prayers to the rulers of the universe. Yes, I worded that bit rather carefully. For you see, candles are equally a part of Christian ritual, Pagan ritual, Buddist and Hindu meditation and many other belief systems. As a Pagan myself, I believe that the candle lends it's own energy, the energy of the flame, the light energy, the heat energy, and increases the power of spellwork or ritual. The ritual or spell, the anointing of a candle with scented oils, the color of a candle, the chant that is spoken while I hold it in my hands and focus on my intentions all this and more direct the energy towards the purpose I have in mind. Because the candle continues to burn even when ritual or prayer is done, it serves as a reminder and a signal that I am still thinking of my purpose, even if I don't spend all day repeating some chant or prayer! Candle magic can be very elaborate, or very simple. Candles can be the focus and main part of a spell, or a tool to reinforce other spell focuses. The simplest candle spell, one you will hear Pagans and even non- pagans often use is simply to say to someone who is suffering; "I am burning a candle for you." What that means, is that I am thinking of you; yes, but more than that. I have lit a candle for you. For instance; if you are sick, I probably chose a green candle for healing energy. I held it in my hands and thought about you and how much I wish you to be healed. I prayed to The Goddess to send healing energy to you. And then I lit this candle and put it on my altar, or any place in my home where it is safe and I will see it now and then. I allow it to burn until it burns itself out. Each time I pass that candle as I go about my day, I look at it and think of you and send you healing energy with my thoughts. The candle reminds me, the candle focuses my thoughts and energies, and adds it's own energy. Those thoughts and that energy goes forth into the universe, and the universe sends it to you as healing energy. If you were sad or down, I might burn a pink candle for you and send you loving thoughts, or perhaps yellow for sunnier days. If your life is in a state of chaos, I would probably chose blue or purple, colors of serenity and peace. If you are under some sort of attack, I would burn a black candle for you. Far from meaning negativity or "bad" things, black is the color that absorbs all other colors. Thus, it absorbs all of the negativity being directed towards you and releases it through the burning flame back into the nothingness that it came from. Black also stands for knowledge for the same reason - it absorbs all and the mind that absorbs all it perceives becomes wise. Often runes or symbols are carved into a candle to focus the intent even more specifically. A dollar sign carved into a green candle focuses the energies on bringing money and abundance. If I were burning that black candle of protection for myself, I would carve a pentagram into it, the symbol of the Goddess, for I believe she protects me. A symbol should be meaningful to you, specifically. If a four leaf clover means good luck to you and you want to draw good luck, then feel free to carve that symbol into a green or yellow candle (or any other color that seems right) and burn it to bring good luck. Candles are cleansing and can be used to cleanse and realign the vibrations in your home, or an area of your home. I have my studio in my house and now and then I have so much work, so many ideas, I feel overwhelmed. The result is I tend to do nothing - go off and play video games maybe! When I notice myself feeling that way, I get a bright yellow candle, a color of happiness and abundance to me. Lit in my studio, the flames consume all the worry and insecurities that keep me from pursuing my dreams. The flickering flame helps me to focus and to remember that an abundance is a good thing! Soon, my mind will calm down, and I can chose the most important project (like maybe an article on candles...) and get down to work. Friendly as they are, candles also demand respect. Candle flames are, yes indeedy, FIRE. Take care where you set a candle, and what you set it on. This doesn't mean you have to go buy an expensive holder, I've burned many a candle on the saucers of my dish set, but have a care. Just be sensible. Burning a candle near a curtain blowing around a window is a bad idea and it doesn't take a genius to see that. If you have cats it is best to consider how they behave around candles. Many of my cats would never get near one - but Pearl will stick her face in it (many the singed whiskers she has had), and has also gleefully and purposefully knocked a burning candle down off the top of a bookcase! (I was sitting a few feet away - watching and thinking she wasn't REALLY going to knock it completely OFF was she? OH NO) Never leave a candle burning and leave the house, or go to sleep. Shit happens and you probably don't want to send the massive amount of energy your burning house would generate! There are quite a few books written on candle magic, and many more general spellbooks also contain candle spells if you wish to do more research or learn more specific spells. Meanwhile...I'll have a candle burning for you. === === About the Author === Artist, writer and webdesigner, Summer Fey Foovay's articles, clipart, and ecards can be found at Demented-Pixie.com (http://demented-pixie.com/). [06] ========= ========= Cauldron Info ========= SUPPORT THE CAULDRON BY VOLUNTEERING TO HELP ========= The Cauldron: A Pagan Forum was founded in December 1997 to provide a friendly but serious discussion area for Pagans on the Internet. We've grown a bit over the years. We now have an active message area, a large web site with around 700 pages of information (including over 300 book and divination deck reviews), and a monthly email newsletter. To continue to provide and expand these services, The Cauldron needs lots of volunteer help from our members and supporters. Here are some of the things members and supporters can do to help The Cauldron: A Pagan Forum thrive: ===== ===== Actively Participate In Our Message Board ===== While our new message board welcomes readers, we encourage members to actively participate by posting their comments and views in our discussions. One of the easiest ways to help The Cauldron is to actively participate in our message board. The staff especially appreciates members who start new topics for discussion based on their own questions, opinions, or interests. http://www.ecauldron.net/ ===== ===== Articles! Essays! Tutorials! ===== We are in constant need of original, well-written and accurate articles, essays, tutorials, and other written items for both our web site and for our Cauldron and Candle newsletter. There's no real limit on length for web site articles. Here are a few areas in which we always need articles: * information on the beliefs and theology of the various Pagan religions, especially non-Wiccan religions * information on holidays and festivals of the various Pagan religions, especially non-Wiccan religions * recipes for oils, incenses, and food for the various Pagan holidays * magick, spells, and ritual information * herbal information * positive articles on dealing with other faiths * information on historical pagan cultures * editorial/opinion pieces Non-Wiccan material is stressed not because we don't want Wiccan material but because good non-Wiccan material has been hard to find. We have a web form you can use to submit an article for consideration: http://www.ecauldron.com/bnbarticleform.php ===== ===== Book Reviews ===== While The Cauldron receives some review copies from a couple of Pagan publishers, there are many books that can only be reviewed on our web site if a member has a copy and writes a good, objective review. The Cauldron is interested in reviews on the more academic books used by reconstructionist Pagan religions as well as on the books one finds on the Pagan/New Age shelf in the bookstore. We have a web form you can use to submit a book review for consideration: http://www.ecauldron.com/bnbbkreviewform.php ===== ===== Graphic Assistance ===== The Cauldron: A Pagan Forum is purposely a low graphics site as we value page download speed over flashy graphics. However, we are always willing to talk with artists who have ideas for well-designed small graphics (small in both physical dimensions and file size) that might enhance a specific article or page. ===== ===== Invite Your Friends ===== If you have friends or acquaintances who you believe would find The Cauldron: A Pagan Forum useful, please tell them about our site. If you are active in our message board and have friends who might enjoy them or have information to contribute, please invite them. ===== ===== Link To The Cauldron ===== If you have a web site where linking to The Cauldron: A Pagan Forum would be appropriate, simply providing a link to this web site is a big help. Our Link to this Site page explains how you can do this if you need help or want some simple graphic buttons to use: http://www.ecauldron.com/linktous.php ===== ===== Donations ===== As The Cauldron: A Pagan Forum uses as many free services as possible, our need for money to operate our site is currently lower than our need for the many items we list above. However, if you have a few dollars to spare, we would be honored to have your help in paying for our web site. You can donate by using either PayPal or the Amazon Honor System links below (we get about 85% of what you donate). Donate via PayPal http://www.ecauldron.com/donatepaypal.php Donate via Amazon.com http://www.amazon.com/paypage/P3903JRFVQVDN ===== ===== Amazon Purchases ===== The Cauldron: A Pagan Forum also receives a small percentage (usually 5%) from most items purchased from Amazon.com when you go to Amazon.com from one of the links to Amazon on our web site. If you purchase a lot of books, CDs, and other items from Amazon.com as many members do, going to Amazon.com through one of our links when you are going to make a purchase there is a painless way to help fund this web site. http://www.ecauldron.com/amazon.php ===== ===== Have Questions or Suggestions? ===== If you have specific questions, proposals or other ideas we haven't mentioned here, please email them to rssapphire00@ecauldron.GETRIDOFEME.com. (Unfortunately, Randall has to answer general "Tell me more?" type questions with a request for a more specific question. He's not trying to be rude, he just can't think of anything general and useful to say that isn't said here.)
