You are receiving this issue because you subscribed. To learn how to unsubscribe, see the last section of this newsletter. This is the first issue of Cauldron and Candle's new smaller format. As mentioned two months ago in the June 2005 newsletter, something was going to have to change if the newsletter was to continue. We will try this new smaller format for a while and see what happens. Randall Sapphire Editor and Publisher, Cauldron and Candle Co-Host, The Cauldron: A Pagan Forum [01] ========= ========= CAULDRON NEWS ========= by The Cauldron: A Pagan Forum Staff ========= ===== ===== FREE EBOOK: CAULDRON MEMBER HANDBOOK ===== The Cauldron now has a free downloadable Member Handbook available. It includes general information copies of our rules and guidelines, our FAQs, as well as information on CauldronMUX and our Wiki. The current version is 1.5, which was released on July 10th. This version is about a 375K download -- it's a zipped Acrobat (PDF) file. We strongly suggest all TC members download a copy when they get a chance. Download Link: http://www.ecauldron.com/record/click.php?id=1 ===== ===== FREE EBOOK: CAULDRON WEB DESIGN GUIDE ===== The first edition of The Cauldron's free Web Site Design Guide is now available for download. It is a zipped PDF file with a selection of articles from the Pagan Webcrafting section of our site along with some new material not found on our web site, such as Star's Web Design Guide. Its purpose is to help Pagans design web sites. You can download this guide via the link below. Download Link: http://www.ecauldron.com/record/click.php?id=2 ===== ===== PAGAN MUSIC SECTION ADDED ===== We've added a small section on music to our web site. At the moment, there are only two pages in this section, but we hope to add more in the future. The first page lists sites that have free and legal music (usually in mp3 format) available for download. These are not links to advertising sites for P2P Networks, but real web sites with collections of song files available for free download and use. The second page lists musicians and groups producing clearly Pagan music -- and links to their web sites. Free Music Downloads: http://www.ecauldron.com/musicfree.php Pagan Music: http://www.ecauldron.com/musicpagan.php ===== ===== CAULDRON GIFT SHOP EXPANDS ===== The Cauldron's CafePress Store has greatly expanded. We do not have any new designs yet, but instead of one or two items with a design, we now have 20 or 30 different items for most designs. We will hopefully be adding some brand new designs soon -- including more by Cauldron members with far more artistic talent than I have. Remember, we get a couple of bucks from each item purchased. http://www.cafepress.com/ecauldronshop [02] ========= ========= CAULDRON EVENTS ========= by The Cauldron: A Pagan Forum Staff ========= ===== ===== AUGUST CAULDRON CHALLENGE ===== For some of you, August is going to mean going back to school, either as students or as faculty/staff. Therefore, it seemed entirely appropriate to make the month's Challenge a research project. As always, the specific topic is up to you--but the general idea is to research something you've been meaning to research, but haven't yet. I don't imagine that most people will want to share every little thing they're learning from this research here, but posting of some general or basic things would be most welcome in the weekly update threads. So--what are you going to research? Thanks for this month's Challenge idea goes to Koi! http://www.ecauldron.net/cncboard.php?m=6297.1 ===== ===== VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: CALLING CAULDRON ARTISTS ===== It's a little known fact, but The Cauldron has a Cafepress shop. It's never sold much (perhaps an item or two a year), but that's probably because it has a limited selection of items -- probably because most of the items were designed by non-artistic me. The few that have sold were generally not done by me. I have a chance to expand the shop by upgrading it to a premium shop for the rest of the year at no out-of-pocket expense to us. This would allow us to sell many different design in the same item (e.g. many different mouse pad designs instead of just the one basic stores allow). However, there would be no point to do this with new art and designs to offer. I know we have a lot of artists on the board. I'm working if any of our artists would like to donate the rights to use a picture or three on these items? I believe the premium stores would let me set up a page where I could credit everyone and even link to your home pages (or shops). If you are interested doing some art, post in this thread and if enough people are interested, I will go more into the specifics of what we need. http://www.ecauldron.net/cncboard.php?m=6303.1 [03] ========= ========= CAULDRON DISCUSSIONS ========= Recent Discussion Topics on our Message Board ========= In an average month, over 200 new discussion topics are started on The Cauldron's message board. Here are a few of the more interesting recent discussions. It's not too late to join in. Thanks to Bloglet, you can now receive an email every night on days we post new site news items to the main page of The Cauldron's web site. These emails contain a link to the new item and the first couple of lines of the news text. You can sign up for Bloglet's free news delivery via the form at the end of the site "News and Updates" section of The Cauldron's main web page. ===== ===== Sacred Sex? ===== You know, every so often I hear people talk about sex. About how it's sacred and a lot of times how it's 'empowering', 'loving' etc... But is it? Many women, myself included, rail against traditional gender roles but, in the end, isn't claiming that sex should only be good and positive on the surface just as bad as embracing those roles? What is sacred sex? * Read (or join in) this discussion: http://www.ecauldron.net/cncboard.php?m=6419.1 ===== ===== When Bad Things Happen? ===== In the differing Pagan religions, what are reasons for bad, awful, tragic things happening to good people? I am working with a child who has a form of dystrophy that will kill him. Parents are religious, and mom said the old "God doesn't give us more than we can handle". I am glad for her that that works for the family, that they take comfort. I also know many who have not been able to handle the hard things in life -- the streets and mental instutions are full of them, not to mention the suicides... This is probably unanswerable, but I am wondering (to be clear), if any of the Pagan religions try to answer this... * Read (or join in) this discussion: http://www.ecauldron.net/cncboard.php?m=6376.1 ===== ===== Then and Now, Us or Them? ===== Some of the recent threads got me to thinking. (yeah...be very afraid of being bored to death...run now) Most of us here at the Cauldron read. A lot. We read about the tradition we follow, if such material is available, we read about the divinities that we feel thumped by, we read about what others are doing and why so- and-so thinks its great/crap/or only tolerable. And here is what I got to thinking. In some of the Recon discussions it has come up that nobody realistically expects to go sacrifice a 100 head of cattle to their Gods; but at the same time, recons and others put a lot of effort into finding out how TO worship in modern times. And how it was done in the distant past always plays in, not only how to worship, but how the deities in question were seen and defined. And from my totally unverifiable UPG, I have found that some of the definitions I have read of various beings is nothing like what I have felt. So how do we know, when being so studiously devout, that what we read really does describe a particular God or Goddess? What we are reading, after all, is the perception of another human...as fallible as we ourselves. I often see pagans dismiss the Bible, for instance...as 'written by men with agendas'. Why would pagan writers be any different? Why are some of the books we peruse for our faiths be any different? Its not that I would ignore those tomes, I think books have value...but that being then, and we are firmly stuck in now, I have to look askance occasionally. It sometimes is as simple as knowing the moon is a chunk of stone, not a glowing goddess; we have the science to be skeptics in far more concrete manner than the Greeks who originated the word! And then, there must be differences between how the original writers would have viewed or explained things, as well....some of that is clear when they disagree with each other even when nearly contemporary. So, I am curious, how do the rest of you reconcile the disjunct in time and technology, in science and history...its not that I thing the folks back then were primitive idiots. I don't... I think they were capable of the exact level of reasoning that we are; but came to their conclusion based (as our conclusions are as well) on the limits of their own age's science and cultural taboos. And does anyone else ever read something, very authoritatively written and just go "Oh, give me a freakin' break..that is absurd!" * Read (or join in) this discussion: http://www.ecauldron.net/cncboard.php?m=6404.1 ===== ===== What Makes A "Real" Wiccan? ===== My eye was caught by this which Sine posted in another thread and it brought some questions to mind that (obviously) only a 'real' Wiccan can answer. "Clearly, without that initiation, there is very little anyone can claim to actually know about Wicca. And, clearly, without all the instructions, the fragments one may have can be misleading and one might come to incorrect conclusions and make stupid statements in public." So, to be a Wiccan, one must go through all the initiations as specified by ? Gardner? or, who? And even if one read all there was, one would still not be able to talk about Wiccanism or have a valid (as in authoritative) opinion? (or could only know 'very little'). Also, there seems to be a lot more people claiming to be Wiccan than can be accounted for statistically by the lineages. Are they not Wiccan? And what happens when the 'real' lineaged ones die out? Since there are few enough around already, this is a real possibility. Also, there is a guy in the U.K. who has run groups for yonks. Turns out his claim to lineage was bogus. I guess that means all the 'initiates' from his groups (perhaps unknown to themselves) are living a lie? Or can this be remedied by them finding a 'real' group and going through the process again? "I am continually amused by the arrogance and hubris in people who believe that one can learn about the Gods from books. Liturgy isn't sacred. The place where proper ritual takes us is, and there is no shortcut to that place. One has to do the work with people who have been there before, for only they know that path." This one really confuses me. I understand the idea that one must have 'deity' knowledge 'directly' from what others have posted. Does the above mean that only people in prescribed groups can experience this? And then, only by people who have 'been there before'? In another thread, an experienced Wiccan said a group was preferable, but not necessary - that one could make the discovery on their own. So is this not the case? And does this mean that there is only one 'proper' ritual, and all else are spurious? That's going to leave a hell of a lot of people out. So, no eclectic Wiccans, then? Not being critical, just totally confused at conflicting reports. Who has the rights of the matter? * Read (or join in) this discussion: http://www.ecauldron.net/cncboard.php?m=6286.1 ===== ===== So, What Makes A Real Witch? ===== In the Real Wiccan thread, Annis said, "One is either a witch or one in not! It is our relationship to the Lady and the Lord which defines us!" I know that proverbially if you put two witches together you'll get three definitions, but I couldn't resist: what is a witch? Is it somebody who has a particular "relationship to the Lord and Lady?" My own working definition is one who uses magic. That would seem to encompass both religious and secular witches; besides, it saves me from cognitive dissonance over appellations like "Christian Witch". (I still baulk at "Christian Wiccan", but to each her own.) * Read (or join in) this discussion: http://www.ecauldron.net/cncboard.php?m=6321.1 [04] ========= ========= CAULDRON REVIEWS ========= Most of The Cauldron's book reviews are now written by Mike Gleason. If you would like to contact Mike with comments about his reviews (or about books you would like to have reviewed), you can email Mike at: gleason.mike@ecauldron.GETRIDOFME.com ===== ===== BOOK: FIFTY YEARS OF WICCA ===== Reviewed by Mike Gleason ===== At last, the book I have been waiting for; a book written by an individual who was there when the Craft first came out of "the broom closet". He doesn't reveal any great mysteries in this book - he takes his oaths of secrecy far too seriously. In fact, he raises more questions than he answers in many ways. In the first chapter, alone, he questions the authenticity of Gardner's version of the Craft. But, as he says on page 12, "It doesn't matter! The Craft works for you. Does it matter whether the rituals that brought you there are three or three thousand years old?" Read the full review on our web site: http://www.ecauldron.com/mg/bkfyow.php ===== ===== BOOK: TEENAGE WITCH'S BOOK OF SHADOWS ===== Reviewed by Mike Gleason ===== This is an extremely short and basic book. It epitomizes the concept of a "Wicca 101" book. The second chapter (page 9 through 12) gives a very workable checklist of "13 Steps to Becoming a Witch." I don't agree with everything here, but the final paragraph of item 10 (actually item 11, but the numbering is messed up) says it all "As a rule, remember KISS. Keep it simple, stupid." Far too many "101" books emphasize the need for this item or that item. This book avoids that pitfall. Read the full review on our web site: http://www.ecauldron.com/mg/bktwbos.php ===== ===== BOOK: WICCAN SPIRITUALITY ===== Reviewed by Mike Gleason ===== Kevin Saunders presents, in this book, an introduction to, and an overview of witchcraft and Wicca as they move into the 21st Century (if you accept the split between the two terms). His work has been well-received by witches and pagans in Britain and should find such acceptance here in the U.S., even though some of views may seem slightly anachronistic. His is not a dogmatic approach. He knows the value of modifying the basics provided by Gardnerian and Alexandrian training to make them relevant to your individual needs. He quotes from "traditional" Books of Shadows, without demanding slavish adherence to the written text. Read the full review on our web site: http://www.ecauldron.com/mg/bkws.php ===== ===== BOOK: ADVANCED WICCAN SPIRITUALITY ===== Reviewed by Mike Gleason ===== This book draws from a wide variety of inspirations from "traditional" Wiccan sources to Jung. It details symbols and ceremonial magick. The author is a Gardnerian Wiccan who has attempted to present his view of what Wicca can be in the 21st Century. It has a traditional foundation (in fact, several traditions), but is not limited to "the way it was." He presents a vision of Wicca as a group function (although acknowledging necessity for individual activities), based on a thorough self- knowledge. Read the full review on our web site: http://www.ecauldron.com/mg/bkaws.php ===== ===== BOOK: TRUE HAUNTINGS ===== Reviewed by Mike Gleason ===== Dr. Denning approached the field of parapsychology from the related field of psychotherapy. She is not one of the many individuals who have set themselves up in this field to prove their own personal belief systems. She does display sympathy for, and an understanding of, the Spiritualism movement. How much that influences her perceptions is impossible to determine strictly from her writings. There are far too many books of ghost stories out there nowadays. There are not so many books which go into the reasons for hauntings and apparitions. Read the full review on our web site: http://www.ecauldron.com/mg/bkth.php ===== ===== BOOK: THE MYSTERIES OF MITHRAS ===== Reviewed by Mike Gleason ===== This book benefits from several things. First, and most obvious, is the number of illustrations scattered throughout it. Although illustrations aren't necessary for understanding the concepts laid out, they help to give a sense of the permanence of this religion. Second, the appendices contain actual texts from the time when Mithraism was a dominant force in the world. Third, the author has provided meditations and initiations for the seven grades of worship of Mithras. Finally, and most importantly, this text has been produced by an author who grew up in the Persian culture and thus approaches the subject from the inside, unlike many authors who approach religions from the outside. Our journey begins with the story of young Eagle boy who has gone on his vision quest ceremony high atop Bear Butte. For several days and nights the spirits have tested and taunted him, giving him no wisdom to carry back with him. Eagle boy is proud, demanding, and rather foolish. Just when it seems he has pushed his luck beyond its breaking point...the story stops. The camera pulls back from a drum in the hands of an elderly Lakota gentleman sitting on a rickety porch surrounded by eagerly listening children. This grandfather is a storyteller, a keeper of the Dreams of his people. His grandson is a young man who lives only in the now. The wheel of one story turns and begins the pattern for another story. Another turn, another story, and so the wheels keep turning, and the tales keep spinning throughout the film, Dreamkeeper. Yet they are all the same. One long continuous tapestry of tales that build lives, lessons, wisdoms, hopes, fears and a rich proud history. We've grown a bit over the years. We now have an active message area, a large web site with around 700 pages of information (including over 300 book and divination deck reviews), and a monthly email newsletter. To continue to provide and expand these services, The Cauldron needs lots of volunteer help from our members and supporters. Here are some of the things members and supporters can do to help The Cauldron: A Pagan Forum thrive: ===== ===== Actively Participate In Our Message Board ===== While our new message board welcomes readers, we encourage members to actively participate by posting their comments and views in our discussions. One of the easiest ways to help The Cauldron is to actively participate in our message board. The staff especially appreciates members who start new topics for discussion based on their own questions, opinions, or interests. http://www.ecauldron.net/ ===== ===== Articles! Essays! Tutorials! ===== We are in constant need of original, well-written and accurate articles, essays, tutorials, and other written items for both our web site and for our Cauldron and Candle newsletter. There's no real limit on length for web site articles. Here are a few areas in which we always need articles: * information on the beliefs and theology of the various Pagan religions, especially non-Wiccan religions * information on holidays and festivals of the various Pagan religions, especially non-Wiccan religions * recipes for oils, incenses, and food for the various Pagan holidays * magick, spells, and ritual information * herbal information * positive articles on dealing with other faiths * information on historical pagan cultures * editorial/opinion pieces Non-Wiccan material is stressed not because we don't want Wiccan material but because good non-Wiccan material has been hard to find. We have a web form you can use to submit an article for consideration: http://www.ecauldron.com/bnbarticleform.php ===== ===== Book Reviews ===== While The Cauldron receives some review copies from a couple of Pagan publishers, there are many books that can only be reviewed on our web site if a member has a copy and writes a good, objective review. The Cauldron is interested in reviews on the more academic books used by reconstructionist Pagan religions as well as on the books one finds on the Pagan/New Age shelf in the bookstore. We have a web form you can use to submit a book review for consideration: http://www.ecauldron.com/bnbbkreviewform.php ===== ===== Graphic Assistance ===== The Cauldron: A Pagan Forum is purposely a low graphics site as we value page download speed over flashy graphics. However, we are always willing to talk with artists who have ideas for well-designed small graphics (small in both physical dimensions and file size) that might enhance a specific article or page. ===== ===== Invite Your Friends ===== If you have friends or acquaintances who you believe would find The Cauldron: A Pagan Forum useful, please tell them about our site. If you are active in our message board and have friends who might enjoy them or have information to contribute, please invite them. ===== ===== Link To The Cauldron ===== If you have a web site where linking to The Cauldron: A Pagan Forum would be appropriate, simply providing a link to this web site is a big help. Our Link to this Site page explains how you can do this if you need help or want some simple graphic buttons to use: http://www.ecauldron.com/linktous.php ===== ===== Donations ===== As The Cauldron: A Pagan Forum uses as many free services as possible, our need for money to operate our site is currently lower than our need for the many items we list above. However, if you have a few dollars to spare, we would be honored to have your help in paying for our web site. You can donate by using either PayPal or the Amazon Honor System links below (we get about 85% of what you donate). Donate via PayPal http://www.ecauldron.com/donatepaypal.php Donate via Amazon.com http://www.amazon.com/paypage/P3903JRFVQVDN ===== ===== Amazon Purchases ===== The Cauldron: A Pagan Forum also receives a small percentage (usually 5%) from most items purchased from Amazon.com when you go to Amazon.com from one of the links to Amazon on our web site. If you purchase a lot of books, CDs, and other items from Amazon.com as many members do, going to Amazon.com through one of our links when you are going to make a purchase there is a painless way to help fund this web site. http://www.ecauldron.com/amazon.php ===== ===== Have Questions or Suggestions? ===== If you have specific questions, proposals or other ideas we haven't mentioned here, please email them to rssapphire00@ecauldron.GETRIDOFEME.com. (Unfortunately, Randall has to answer general "Tell me more?" type questions with a request for a more specific question. He's not trying to be rude, he just can't think of anything general and useful to say that isn't said here.)
